Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Thomas Dellota-Niles West High School
Q: What role has mentorship and advisory work played in your career development?
Joining the NSCA advisory board and engaging with mentors like Vanderbush and Gary Schofield accelerated my growth, expanded my network, and allowed me to lift the profession forward by paying it forward to younger coaches.
Thomas Dellota-Niles West High School
Q: How do you balance a unified program with sport-specific needs across a diverse student body?
We start with a unified foundation—basic movements and lifting—then progress into sport-specific elements as the year advances. We use a four-bucket model (linear, multidirectional, rotational, aquatic) to organize training and keep it manageable for coaches while still addressing individual and team goals.
Thomas Dellota-Niles West High School
Q: How did your background in CPS and early budgets shape your coaching approach today?
The early years taught me to rely on creativity and to maximize minimal resources, which built resilience and problem-solving. That experience helps me teach coaches and athletes that results come from effort and smart planning, not just expensive equipment.
Thomas Dellota-Niles West High School
Q: What was the culture like when you arrived at the program, and how did you approach changing it?
The culture was transitioning; the previous staff had left, so there was a need to shake things up in a positive way. I focused on opening the space, removing bottlenecks, integrating technology, and building buy-in by demonstrating value through athlete outcomes and collaboration with coaches.
Work Capacity with Ross Garner- Effingham County High School
Q: How do you periodize conditioning across the season?
I rotate between aerobic emphasis and interval emphasis every three to four weeks, integrating athletic circuits that carry conditioning loads without overwhelming the players. In-season work focuses on maintaining performance while managing fatigue.
