  • Great fitness questions podcast

Been listening to this for a couple years now.

I’m a lifelong runner, cross trainer, cyclist, hiker. 66 years young, and on a journey to stay healthy, injury free and flexible.

This is by nature, a listener questions generated podcast. So, you may hear the same topics discussed even within the same episode. I get a lot of perspective on my personal workouts from Dan’s comments, and usually listen while working out.

  • Grumpy, Mean Spirited, and Egotistical

Same old topics, same brags, way too much meandering. Grumpy Dan needs to go back to the drawing board. Used to be a big fan. Last few books are rambling repeats. Money grabs. It’s too bad, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge, but now he talks down and offers nothing new. And News Flash Dan. If it takes you 300 pages to discuss ES and then we buy it and you complain that people have questions, maybe you’re the problem. You ramble and frankly, for an educated man with as many published books as you ha... more

EP 342 - Single KB, Progressive Resistance, ABF, Barbell Training, KB Snatch, & More
Q: From Adrian: Is there still value to kettlebell snatch for most trainees, or should they focus on swings and cleans?
There is value to the kettlebell snatch if you know how to snatch and enjoy it, but for many people the most practical path is to prioritize hip-dominant moves like cleans and swings or the explosive elements of clean-and-press; the snatch remains a useful tool for certain goals and skilled trainees.
EP 342 - Single KB, Progressive Resistance, ABF, Barbell Training, KB Snatch, & More
Q: From Luke: I'm 30, with a PT degree, working on hypertrophy and strength with older clients. How should I structure progression when jumping between weights like 16 kg to 24 kg?
Progression can be multi-faceted: increase sets and reps before increasing load, use density (same work in less time), and consider alternating hands or goblet squats to balance unilateral work; stay mindful of form and hinge mechanics especially with older clients.
EP 342 - Single KB, Progressive Resistance, ABF, Barbell Training, KB Snatch, & More
Q: From Ben: I'm thinking of running the Snatch Barbell Complex. Is this similar to what you describe, and would you recommend it for a college athlete population?
Yes, the Snatch Barbell Complex can be a useful warm-up and conditioning tool, especially for athletes; keep reps around eight and monitor how the wrists and shoulders feel, adjust based on the athlete's experience and recovery as you progressively build the routine.
EP 340 - Strength Standards, ABF, Loaded Carries, Building Muscle, KB Deadlifts & More
Q: What are your thoughts on loaded carries as a measure of maximal strength and how has your thinking evolved?
He reaffirms the value of loaded carries as practical, movement-quality tests that reveal true strength and postural integrity, and discusses integrating them with traditional lifts to assess fitness and reduce injury risk.
EP 340 - Strength Standards, ABF, Loaded Carries, Building Muscle, KB Deadlifts & More
Q: Would you recommend a bulking plan for middle-aged lifters who want to gain muscle, given fat tends to stick once added later in life?
Dan advises a gradual, protein-focused approach with a clear calorie target, emphasizes choosing a sustainable program (Mass Made Simple as a possible temporary focus), and stresses the importance of protein intake and density in training rather than chasing rapid mass gains.
