  • Great fitness questions podcast

Been listening to this for a couple years now.

I’m a lifelong runner, cross trainer, cyclist, hiker. 66 years young, and on a journey to stay healthy, injury free and flexible.

This is by nature, a listener questions generated podcast. So, you may hear the same topics discussed even within the same episode. I get a lot of perspective on my personal workouts from Dan’s comments, and usually listen while working out.

  • Grumpy, Mean Spirited, and Egotistical

Same old topics, same brags, way too much meandering. Grumpy Dan needs to go back to the drawing board. Used to be a big fan. Last few books are rambling repeats. Money grabs. It’s too bad, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge, but now he talks down and offers nothing new. And News Flash Dan. If it takes you 300 pages to discuss ES and then we buy it and you complain that people have questions, maybe you’re the problem. You ramble and frankly, for an educated man with as many published books as you ha... more

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP 358 - ABC, Deadlifts, Staying Athletic & Competitive, Setting Goals, Programming & More
Q: Andreas asks how to manage shoulder rehab while staying strong and advancing fitness goals given a busy life and a desire to balance multiple training modalities.
Dan recommends prioritizing shoulder-friendly movements (e.g., half-kneeling press, globe press, waiter press) and integrating the Running Back Complex for shoulder work, while postponing heavy pressing until the shoulder is more stable; he also advises using a seasonal, phased approach to training and considering rehab progress before adding high-stress lifts.
EP 358 - ABC, Deadlifts, Staying Athletic & Competitive, Setting Goals, Programming & More
Q: Rory asks about using a trap bar deadlift on a training schedule that already includes armor-building days, and how to balance a busy life with fitness goals.
Dan suggests sticking to a simple structure like two pressing days and one armor-building complex, then alternating trap bar deadlifts across weeks to build hinge strength without overloading; he emphasizes practical loading, gradual progression, and listening to the body's response while keeping a realistic overall weekly plan.
EP 359 - Full Body vs. Split Training, Squats, Kettlebell Progressions, Breaking Plateaus & More
Q: Johnny asks for practical tips for a young dad and how to balance long-term programming and injury risk while still benefiting from the armor-building approach; what would you recommend for consistency and coaching?
Dan highlights the importance of coaching, routines, and rules to make programs stick, advocating for a simple structure (e.g., morning routine, consistent workouts, and clear progression), plus considering a coach to maintain accountability and proper programming.
EP 359 - Full Body vs. Split Training, Squats, Kettlebell Progressions, Breaking Plateaus & More
Q: Stefano asks about the original armor building ladder concept and how to implement 5- to 15-round ladders with various weights; how should someone approach the 2-1-3 vs 1-2-3 arrangement in ABF ladders?
Dan acknowledges the initial confusion, explains the ladder concept with heavy-to-light weight drops, and encourages trying a few rounds with heaviest load followed by big drops, then gradually nudging lighter rounds upward as feedback shows what works.
EP 359 - Full Body vs. Split Training, Squats, Kettlebell Progressions, Breaking Plateaus & More
Q: Sam, would you please help me figure out an alternative for the squats in the kettlebell armor building complex? Do you think the kettlebell cleaner press with weighted, loaded carriers could be a suitable accommodation?
Dan explains that as loads rise, walls appear and progression can be tough; he endorses adapting by using heavier weights for some rounds and lighter rounds strategically, while ensuring the overall structure remains feasible for the individual.
