  • Rusty’s politics need to go

Rusty stepped over a pretty bright line having nothing to do with starting strength. I don’t get the vapors but he should stay on topic.

  • Condescending and apart of a MAGA cult.

I enjoy listening to barbell training talk. I loved Matt Reynolds’s old podcast so I thought I would enjoy this but I just can’t.

This is just Rip’s outlet for living out a Rush Limbaugh type fantasy. Rip will just condescend every question that comes in. He rarely actually gives advice and these cackling yes men stooges are on the side just encouraging him and clapping like seal.

Anytime anyone associated with starting strength gets an ounce of criticism they start crashing out. So I’m sure... more

  • Wanted to like it but just can’t

Read the one star comments before listening then decide. I totally agree with the philosophy and approach to strength building hence the 1 star at least. I wanted to like the podcast and was looking for serious and informative conversation but it never provided anything of value. What a lost opportunity to expand the listener base. I don’t hate him or his podcast but its appears to be just his personal platform and circle jerk, which he’s entitled to have. He’ll also say I’m “low IQ” for this “h... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A Episode - This Week's Installment | Starting Strength Radio #348
Q: If someone has a demanding work schedule, what is a practical way to fit in effective training without sacrificing recovery?
Prioritize higher sleep, increased caloric intake if possible, and structure workouts on the lowest-stress days with smarter distribution across the week, sometimes splitting the three total-body sessions into subgroups to maintain recovery while staying consistent.
Q&A Episode - This Week's Installment | Starting Strength Radio #348
Q: What cues are most effective to help lifters learn the double lay back in the press?
The most effective approach is to have the lifter study videos of people who perform the double lay back well, understand how the hips are involved, and then apply that cue to their own lifting with lighter weights before progressing to heavier loads.
Q&A Episode - This Week's Installment | Starting Strength Radio #348
Q: What is your take on using peptides for recovery when someone has had injuries like a tendon rupture?
Interventions like peptides can seem appealing, but their effectiveness depends on broader factors such as training consistency, nutrition, and recovery; there is no substitute for addressing fundamentals, and peptides should not be viewed as a magic solution for tendon or joint injuries.
Q&A Episode - This Week's Installment | Starting Strength Radio #348
Q: Why is the push press treated differently from a strict press with a hip thrust, and should lifters avoid it?
Push press uses the knees to unlock and then extend, giving more upward thrust, which means it is not a direct substitute for a strict press with hip drive; you need to decide which is appropriate for the goal and ensure you're not conflating the two distinct movements.
Q&A Episode - This Week's Installment | Starting Strength Radio #348
Q: How do you account for individual anatomical differences in the five lifts when teaching the program from the book?
The diagnostic angles will vary by person, but if you follow the model as described in the blue book, those differences are accounted for and the technique remains correct for everybody, assuming there are no unique constraints like a leg or spinal issue.
