  • Amazing podcast

Came across voodoo power after the episode with Zach Even-Esh one of OGs. Having gone gone through several of the older pods they are all so informative and entertaining. “Building Game Speed with Adam Vogel | Athletic Development at Homewood-Flossmoor HS”
Q: How do you integrate tempering and body tempering into an in-season schedule?
Tempering is used to reduce injuries and improve comfort and function, often applied to calves and shoulders; it's typically performed in shorter, efficient sessions during practice blocks, with emphasis on tolerating the stimulus and then reinforcing mobility and activation patterns to maintain performance with less soreness.
“Building Game Speed with Adam Vogel | Athletic Development at Homewood-Flossmoor HS”
Q: What was the main idea behind using Square One and how did you verify its effectiveness?
The main idea was to use Square One as a diagnostic and training tool to reset neuromuscular pathways, test with a baseline reflex, and then re-test to see if athletes could hit higher speeds; results varied, but in some cases a notable improvement to around the 1.0 m/s mark after a reset was observed, especially when combined with other recovery methods and tailored programming.
Coach Alex Gibson’s Fitness Insights: Building Strong Athletes, Strong Culture
Q: Can you explain how Universal Speed Rating changed your marketing and communication with parents?
Universal Speed Rating provides a clear, understandable metric (miles per hour in a 10-yard fly) that resonates with parents and athletes. It helps turn speed goals into concrete conversations about progress and recruitment, making it easier for families to see the value of speed-focused training.
Coach Alex Gibson’s Fitness Insights: Building Strong Athletes, Strong Culture
Q: How do you balance training frequency with school and practice schedules for your athletes?
We use a flexible four-day plan with make-up workouts and prioritize speed and plyometrics in the first half of sessions and weight training in the latter half. We adjust daily priorities based on each athlete's upcoming games and practices to avoid overtraining while still driving progress.
Coach Alex Gibson’s Fitness Insights: Building Strong Athletes, Strong Culture
Q: What drew you to focus on female athletes and how did that shape your gym's culture?
Being a female strength coach creates natural connections with young female athletes who may feel intimidated entering a weight room. By leading with empathy, communication, and a welcoming culture, we helped more girls feel comfortable training, bought into the program, and see improvements in confidence and performance.
