  • True, Motivational, Educational. Like listening to a good friend

I have been listening to Hurdle and following Emily for a few years now. My friends introduced me to the show when I was training for my first big race: the 2019 NYC Half Marathon. I’d been a D1 lacrosse player and played various sports all my life, but navigating fitness and nutrition on my own post-grad was harder than I’d expected. I connected with Emily’s sentiments, approaches to fitness, nutrition, overall wellness and her natural mix of professionalism, poise, and relatability. I took her... more

  • Inspiring, uplifting, relatable

I started with episode 101 featuring Natalie Kuhn of “The Class.” I had not heard of Emily before but wanted to learn more about Natalie. I was immediately drawn in by the honest exchange and fun tone Emily set. I’ve especially enjoyed the interviews with Kerri Walsh Jennings (episode 117) and Coach Bennett (episode 120). I also like the personal reflections in 5-minute Friday. Thanks Emily for keeping it real, handing out some motivation, and creating connection.

  • REALLY helped me

My name is also Emily, so that’s what first caught my eye when I stumbled across this podcast. Her story is amazing and was relatable for me. I was going through a big change when I first started listening on my morning/evening commute. Emily and her guests motivated me to keep going when I had some really tough days. I stopped being scared of my job and started realizing that I am capable of the work set out for me. I am actually a better person now because of this podcast.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What’s the Best That Could Happen?
Q: Since you've had to navigate your own shifts and intensity lately, do you have any advice for getting back into the swing of things? How do you give yourself grace when your body feels different?
Emily advises starting slowly, treating this moment as a reintroduction to sport rather than a full comeback, focusing on small, doable efforts and maintaining grace with oneself. She emphasizes meeting yourself where you are now, avoiding comparison to past performance, and using practices like the 10-minute rule to build momentum without overwhelming the body.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Flexibility in Every Season
Q: Hi Emily, happy Friday. I've been upping my mileage and have a great coach, but I struggle with post-long-run energy as a woman in my early 50s. Any insights on avoiding the bonk and getting stuff done later in the day after a 10-mile run?
Emily acknowledges the challenge, recommends downtime after long runs, and outlines practical fueling: prioritize carbs before and after, with a recommended 3:1 or 4:1 carbs-to-protein ratio to replenish glycogen and repair muscles, plus accessible options like chocolate milk, yogurt with fruit, a banana-oats-protein smoothie, and balanced meals afterward.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Go After A Goal That Scares You, Trust Me
Q: Hey Emily, I'm Preya. I struggle with consistently showing up for myself. I know you say, where there's a why, there's a way. And I love it, but I just can't seem to stick to my why. Does that make sense? Can you help me with staying consistent and remembering my why?
Emily suggests meeting herself where she's at, focusing on regular check-ins, and using a simple journaling practice: one page each morning and ending with one thing she's grateful for. This helps align daily actions with the bigger why and keeps momentum by starting the day with clarity and purpose.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Life As a Series Of Intervals
Q: Hi, Emily. I love watching snippets from your morning routine and admire how productive you are. Do you have any apps or tools that you use to help you with your mornings, or is this all on autopilot at this point?
Emily shares three key apps: Open for meditation and breathwork, Strava for running, and the Future app for strength training; she notes she links these in the show notes and aims to keep mornings tech-light, using her iPad as a calm, limited-connect device.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: A $14,000 Act of Self-Love
Q: Would you respond to or remove negativity in a way that maintains your boundaries while still engaging with your audience?
She emphasizes prioritizing personal boundaries and mental health, choosing actions that support her broader purpose and not letting the comment section dictate her worth.
