  • True, Motivational, Educational. Like listening to a good friend

I have been listening to Hurdle and following Emily for a few years now. My friends introduced me to the show when I was training for my first big race: the 2019 NYC Half Marathon. I’d been a D1 lacrosse player and played various sports all my life, but navigating fitness and nutrition on my own post-grad was harder than I’d expected. I connected with Emily’s sentiments, approaches to fitness, nutrition, overall wellness and her natural mix of professionalism, poise, and relatability. I took her... more

  • Inspiring, uplifting, relatable

I started with episode 101 featuring Natalie Kuhn of “The Class.” I had not heard of Emily before but wanted to learn more about Natalie. I was immediately drawn in by the honest exchange and fun tone Emily set. I’ve especially enjoyed the interviews with Kerri Walsh Jennings (episode 117) and Coach Bennett (episode 120). I also like the personal reflections in 5-minute Friday. Thanks Emily for keeping it real, handing out some motivation, and creating connection.

  • REALLY helped me

My name is also Emily, so that’s what first caught my eye when I stumbled across this podcast. Her story is amazing and was relatable for me. I was going through a big change when I first started listening on my morning/evening commute. Emily and her guests motivated me to keep going when I had some really tough days. I stopped being scared of my job and started realizing that I am capable of the work set out for me. I am actually a better person now because of this podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Stepping Into a New Chapter
Q: What is the difference between the Rebel Fuel Cell and the Super Comp Trainer in terms of use and performance?
The Rebel Fuel Cell is lightweight and good for picking up the pace in regular workouts, while the Super Comp Trainer has a carbon plate and a very energetic midsole, making it more suited to race day or specific speed work when you want a boost, though it should be used sparingly to protect your feet.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: The Importance Of Finding Your Own Rhythm
Q: Jen from Seattle asked about diaphragmatic breathing while running and how to manage HRV in training; what practical steps can she take right now?
Emily suggests running by rate of perceived exertion rather than a watch readout, remove the pressure of real-time HR data during runs, and focus on building breathing rhythm beforehand. She recommends daily floor breathing, then 2–3 minutes of walking focusing on deep belly breaths, followed by a rhythmic three-by-three breathing pattern (inhale for three steps, exhale for three). If that feels odd, try a three-by-two pattern. She also cautions against over-relying on HRV hype and treats HRV as a recovery dashboard rather than a pacing tool, using morning HRV data to gauge recovery. Finally, she reinforces trusting the body over the watch and continuing consistent practice to train the diaphragm.
Built on Consistency: Katie Ledecky on Reframing Hard Days, Swimming Into the Record Books & Inspiring the Next Generation
Q: What is your why, Katie?
Katie describes a personal journey to continually improve while drawing inspiration from helping the next generation and using her platform to uplift others, emphasizing balance, consistency, and the joy of training.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Being A Beginner Is A Prerequisite For Greatness
Q: What is your approach to staying productive on days when motivation is low, and how do you design a schedule that actually works?
Emily explains using a time-bound to-do list, creating realistic deadlines, and leveraging flexible environments to move tasks forward. She also emphasizes knowing personal productivity windows and allowing for grace and gradual experimentation.
5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Stop Overcommitting Your Energy
Q: How do I actually learn to be okay with the quiet without feeling like I'm wasting my time?
The host suggests dabbling in both: schedule time alone and plan limited social activities, so you can enjoy solitary time while still keeping connections and social energy intact.
