  • Brilliant

A truly brilliant podcast that is both emotional and laugh-out-loud funny. I came across it as I’m working on my Master’s dissertation on internal stigma experienced by people living with HIV, and it resonated deeply with my research. The podcast tackles heavy, often silenced topics with warmth, honesty, and humour, making it not only informative but profoundly human.

  • Absolutely Amazing

Listening to these incredible stories, which Dan elicits with empathy and tenderness, is insightful and inspiring. Many of the stories the interviewees tell are of love, hope and life in the face of so much adversity. They have made me laugh at loud with them, and cry buckets of tears as it strikes to the heart how lonely and terrifying it can be. Massive congratulations to Dan. I imagine that these stories will be of solace to others worldwide & an education we all need for more empathy and bet... more

  • Timely bulletins

Dan Hall’s subtle survey of the HIV landscape packs a huge punch. Fed entirely by personal stories, not statistics or headlines, it not only reminding us how brutal and ignorant much early treatment of those with HIV were but how that brutality continues in sweeping aid cuts to countries where the diagnosis is still often a death sentence. It is not only making me feel my age but reminding me how lucky I am to be alive.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Silvia Petretti: Peers, Power, Persistence
Q: Do you feel that peer support in a way offers comfort and help in a way that clinical care can't?
Silvia describes peer support as deeply healing and empowering, offering equal footing with peers who have lived experience, which contrasts with clinical care by providing lived knowledge, practical guidance, and a sense of belonging that medications alone cannot deliver.
“Jan”: Borders, Belonging, Becoming
Q: Up to this point, can you describe what your regime was regarding sexual health around HIV? And what was happening?
Jan explains that he was on PrEP in college, faced limited access in Turkey during the pandemic, and describes the challenges of obtaining PrEP and later HIV treatment amid lockdowns and a state healthcare system under strain.
“Jan”: Borders, Belonging, Becoming
Q: So can you begin by telling us how old you are? And tell me about the start of your life. What was it like?
Jan says he is 27 and describes a childhood shaped by rapid but hidden diversity in Turkey, where public life discouraged Kurdish language and cultural expression, leading to a sense of being 'othered' that he later navigated through education, status, and eventually emigration.
Chris Smith: Diagnosis, Discovery, Defiance
Q: Before you publicly disclosed, did you fear being outed or facing political consequences?
Yes, constant fear of being photographed or exposed, but I weighed the personal and political costs and chose to live openly when I felt ready and principled to do so.
Angelina Namiba: Motherhood, Mentoring, Movement
Q: Why was there a delay in following up after initial testing, and how did you overcome that fear?
She explains fear of the diagnosis, stigma from media narratives, and family experiences with HIV as drivers for avoidance, followed by eventual engagement with counselling and peer support to cope.
