  • Engaging

A podcast that has picked up velocity by engaging world leaders whose first language is not necessarily English. It works. It offers a much-needed breadth of perspective beyond the reach of standard broadcasters.

The hosts are considered, not gotcha merchants, and the conversation is at the level of real world decisions not theoretical soundbites.

A chance to sit in on the kind of conversation many of us would like to have with these leaders. Good on you guys.

  • Great interview with Naz Shah

I hope you do more interviews with Naz Shah, and Angela Rayner, because it’s quite a while ago that Rayner was interviewed. It certainly puts things on perspective when we hear their stories; it’d be nice to hear interviews with other people who have come through tough times and been inspired to get into politics. Anyway, I’m going to buy Naz’s book on Audible. She’s done her own recording of it and it’ll be a good one to listen to in the writer’s own voice, I think.

  • What Political Debate Should Sound Like

This show is genuinely brilliant. Both presenters bring real knowledge, experience, and passion, and what makes it stand out is how they challenge each other from opposite sides without turning it into noise.

Rory’s deep dives are fascinating, and Alastair explains things with such calm clarity that complex issues actually make sense.

I wish more people in politics were like this, asking the right questions, doing the work, and focusing on real change instead of just shouting the loudest.

  • A mixed bag

Some episodes (Kinnock springs to mind) are outstanding. Others are less good but still very interesting. And some are not worth the time or energy (Gove’s interview was simply awful, he was arrogant and condescending with no real sense he has ever learned or reflected). And some (Pompeo) I just can’t bring myself to listen to.

Rory and Allistair’s interview style seems a bit hit and miss. I like the long form of the pod, it allows a real insight to the person being interviewed. But sometimes i... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

184. President of Ukraine: Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Q: What role did diplomacy and negotiation play in your strategy before and during the war?
Negotiation was a tool to de-escalate and stabilize; I pursued talks with Putin to finish with Minsk, but when war began, strategy shifted to mobilizing internal resilience, seeking trilateral dialogue with the US and Europe, and ensuring Ukraine's survival and strategic reforms.
184. President of Ukraine: Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Q: Did you anticipate that Russia might pursue a full invasion when you were elected, and how did you view the threat at the time?
I couldn't foresee a full-scale invasion; Crimea's occupation was a major shock, and I understood that Russia's goals were to destabilize and push for concessions, but I always aimed to keep Ukraine united and moving toward reform and EU alignment.
181. Ai Weiwei: China, Censorship, and Dissidence Through Art
Q: Where do you think Chinese culture is going in the next 10, 20 years?
Weiwei suggests China is navigating a long transition from traditional culture through revolutionary upheavals to a post-state framework, with a focus on rebuilding cultural identity, integrating past and present, and balancing artistic independence with societal expectations.
181. Ai Weiwei: China, Censorship, and Dissidence Through Art
Q: Tell us a little bit about the detention. What happened?
Weiwei explains that detention felt, in his view, like a calculated attempt to intimidate; he faced intense interrogations and feared a possible long-term imprisonment, but he also saw it as a continuation of a lifelong fight against censorship and control, driven by his commitment to truth and his responsibilities as a parent.
178. Gavin Newsom: The Next President Of The United States?
Q: Do you anticipate running for higher office, and what would guide that decision?
Newsom expresses openness but emphasizes the importance of family input and the need for bottom-up political work, suggesting that timing and the political environment will influence any decision to run.
