  • Steph basing teachers

Maybe Steph should go into some schools and hear the brilliant financial education going on. As a teacher I came here to learn, but I can’t put up with her teacher bashing anymore, so I’ll be removing this show from my list and go elsewhere.

  • Great podcast but presenter needs to relax

For the love of god can Rob stop talking over people!! Let your guests speak. He just bulldozes conversations and his voice is really frantic and grating. Good content and insight, but he needs to improve his podcasting skills so it’s more enjoyable for the listener. It comes across like he’s desperate for air time. Other than that, great podcast 👍

  • Has turned into one long ad

I love this podcast and in particular Robert Preston’s insights into the economy, policy and wider world view. However I have recently found it has morphed into one long ad. There appear to be more ads than content - in comparison with other podcasts. It is very frustrating to listen to.

  • Hargreaves

When are you going to start talking about Hargreaves taking investor interest? They make a huge proportion of their profits from not paying interest that is received back to the client in other words a hidden charge. If this were dividends that they were withholding or growth that they skimmed you would be all over it!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

276. Will bond market vigilantes see off Starmer’s rivals?
Q: Robert, what's your take on the Bank of England's scenarios and how they relate to energy shocks?
The MPC is divided about inflation risk and election-driven dynamics; scenario B seems most likely, but energy shocks could push rates higher if second-round effects materialize.
272. Is Anthropic holding businesses to ransom?
Q: Why do you think OpenAI is going to go bust given its ambitious scale?
Mallaby explains that OpenAI's heavy burn rate and the leakage of forecasts through client expectations create a fragile financial model, and that without turning profitable or going public to access broader capital, the economics could fail.
270. AI minister: How we build a trillion dollar AI company
Q: How does the fund differ from private venture capital?
It combines venture-like speed and decision-making with government backing, aiming for high standards and sovereignty relevance, while also enabling private sector participation through a blended structure in other funds.
270. AI minister: How we build a trillion dollar AI company
Q: What is the purpose of the 500 million pound Sovereign AI Fund?
To anchor AI startups in the UK at early stages, leveraging government leverage beyond cash—procurement, visas, data access—to help British AI companies scale and remain UK-based as they grow.
269. Monzo founder: AI will kill income tax
Q: What risks and opportunities does this pose for people in the UK fintech and tech ecosystem?
The conversation underscores regulatory challenges, the value of domestic data centers, talent density, and the potential for capital to remain locally, strengthening the UK as a hub for tech but needing policy support.
