One of the best podcasts I’ve heard regarding Mandelson. Whilst importantly respecting the victims it avoided repeating everything the MSM is saying every five minutes. Much new information about what he did was presented and placed in historical, economic and political context. This was one where the Steph-Robert duo worked really well which isn’t always the case. Does make me wonder if Pesto could do a better political pod as he has terrific insights and great media experience.
I was listening to Curtice who is intelligent and captivating and yet Rob just kept interrupting. If you have a guest please let them speak.
I’ve always been fond of Steph, but the discussion of Sir Keir’s visit to China and its potential impact on the British economy felt lacking. Steph’s comments came across as narrow and negative. Saying “working with a country that isn’t great in terms of how it treats people” (5:00) feels overly generalised and unfair. Couldn’t help noticing the pods on week of 26th Jan - one on how more unprofitable businesses need to close and one later in the week decrying a reduction in the amount of business rate relief some types of business get because it is forcing hairdressers to close.
The Rest is Money is the first podcast I hit play on every single week. As an NHS doctor, I find Steph and Robert’s insights into the intersection of economics and everyday life absolutely incredible. I’ve had more ‘light bulb’ moments listening to their perspectives than with any other financial show—they have a rare gift for making complex global shifts feel personal and understandable. Simply essential listening
