  • Steph please stop going on about your business.

Steph needs to listen more and talk less. She talks total rubbish and is very annoying generally and especially when wanging on and on about her business. More Robert less Steph.

  • Less disquisition more inquisition

Listening to Nick Clegg, who spent the last 7 years shilling for company that helped turn the news cycle into a minute by minute, individualised cesspit of polarization, suggest that the “intellectual energy” in the UK is coming from the far right is beyond irony. Zero pushback from Preston, this is not journalism.

  • Predistribution

Just listened to this. And 40 minutes later I have no idea what this mad woman was on about, barring something about needing more swimming pools in London. Robert and Steph totally dropped the ball on this one. They needed to intervene to try to clarify if there were actually any ideas there.

  • Good when it’s topical

Good when we’re getting the hosts’ insights on current/future issues with relevant guests but lately just seems to be an advert for whatever guest’s book every week like so many podcasts that have run out of ideas

  • Let's keep trying

Socialism didn't work before and killed a ridiculous amount of human beings. But let's keep trying, maybe taking money away from people with strong work ethics and giving it to lazy people will work this time.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

281. How to tax billionaires
Q: Could countries implement this unilaterally without international cooperation?
Yes, countries can implement their own minimum wealth tax; experience shows that bank transparency and information exchange enable enforcement and reduce opportunities for tax avoidance across borders.
281. How to tax billionaires
Q: How would you handle wealth held in shares or art when valuing wealth for taxation?
Wealth would be valued by commonly observed market benchmarks for shares and easy-to-value assets like art/paintings, using holding structures and standard valuation methods to minimize manipulation.
281. How to tax billionaires
Q: What would be the basic structure of the proposed wealth tax?
A floor tax of 2 percent of wealth for individuals with more than 100 million pounds in wealth, calculated on wealth rather than income, with no deductions, designed to capture the true value of wealth and limit avoidance.
276. Will bond market vigilantes see off Starmer’s rivals?
Q: Robert, what's your take on the Bank of England's scenarios and how they relate to energy shocks?
The MPC is divided about inflation risk and election-driven dynamics; scenario B seems most likely, but energy shocks could push rates higher if second-round effects materialize.
272. Is Anthropic holding businesses to ransom?
Q: Why do you think OpenAI is going to go bust given its ambitious scale?
Mallaby explains that OpenAI's heavy burn rate and the leakage of forecasts through client expectations create a fragile financial model, and that without turning profitable or going public to access broader capital, the economics could fail.
