  • Steph please stop going on about your business.

Steph needs to listen more and talk less. She talks total rubbish and is very annoying generally and especially when wanging on and on about her business. More Robert less Steph.

  • Less disquisition more inquisition

Listening to Nick Clegg, who spent the last 7 years shilling for company that helped turn the news cycle into a minute by minute, individualised cesspit of polarization, suggest that the “intellectual energy” in the UK is coming from the far right is beyond irony. Zero pushback from Preston, this is not journalism.

  • Predistribution

Just listened to this. And 40 minutes later I have no idea what this mad woman was on about, barring something about needing more swimming pools in London. Robert and Steph totally dropped the ball on this one. They needed to intervene to try to clarify if there were actually any ideas there.

  • Good when it’s topical

Good when we’re getting the hosts’ insights on current/future issues with relevant guests but lately just seems to be an advert for whatever guest’s book every week like so many podcasts that have run out of ideas

  • Let's keep trying

Socialism didn't work before and killed a ridiculous amount of human beings. But let's keep trying, maybe taking money away from people with strong work ethics and giving it to lazy people will work this time.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

288. Which politician is the worst tax dodger?
Q: Do we need to see what politicians earn and how they earn it?
There is a debate about transparency versus privacy; while some disclosure is standard, requiring full visibility could deter capable people from entering politics, though it would increase public accountability.
286. Dan Neidle: Pubs don’t deserve a VAT cut
Q: Would this kind of tax cut impact employment or the viability of small venues in the longer term?
The long-run evidence suggests VAT cuts rarely translate into widespread price reductions for consumers; instead, profits rise or rents adjust, potentially harming smaller players who don't capture the benefit. More regular reviews of business rates and targeted support would be preferable to a permanent, broad cut.
286. Dan Neidle: Pubs don’t deserve a VAT cut
Q: Dan, what do you think about the idea of cutting VAT to 10% for pubs and restaurants, and would it actually help small businesses?
The idea is a terrible misallocation of 10 billion pounds; most benefits would flow to large chains and landlords, not to the small, struggling restaurants, and the economic incidence would be passed on to consumers through higher prices or kept as higher margins by sellers. A targeted approach would be more effective than a broad VAT cut.
289. Why we need fewer civil servants
Q: What were the core elements of the reform strategy, and how did you decide what to cut or keep?
The strategy had three pillars: massive reform to reduce the headcount and create savings (52 billion cumulative, 20 billion annual at peak), innovation to replace failed external programs with in-house capabilities (GovUK), and growth via smarter procurement to drive SME participation and regional growth while maintaining service quality.
291. Does Burnham have any wiggle room?
Q: Everyone's talking about Andy Burnham becoming Prime Minister. How important is the Chancellor role? Does it matter who they are?
The Chancellor is very important, and the person chosen needs to be broadly aligned with Burnham's direction, while also being palatable to financial markets and lenders, to maintain credibility and stability.
