  • Cooking in schools

Tim stated that cooking is not taught in schools anymore. What nonsense. Both my son and daughter had 2 years of ‘food and nutrition’ in public high school where they learned to cook all manner of things. I’ve lost all trust in Tim since making such sweeping statements which are clearly untrue. Why don’t you actually make an episode precisely on this topic so we can really find out what’s being taught in schools in terms of nutrition and healthy eating!

  • Not as good..

Still informative and generally a good listen (although Tim often sounds a bit jaded)

However- This seems to be more of a money making exercise these days what with all the adverts for their own products (which are not cheap).

Hopefully it will find its way again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Most replayed moment: The Impact of Ultra-Processed Food on Young People | Dr Andy Chan
Q: And Andy, this is because UPF is very complicated, isn't it?
Yes, UPF is multifaceted with various preservatives, emulsifiers, and processing steps; the research aims to disentangle which components or steps might be harmful and to determine if specific UPF categories correlate with particular biological markers of obesity, heart disease, or cancer.
Most replayed moment: The Impact of Ultra-Processed Food on Young People | Dr Andy Chan
Q: Could you maybe summarize the study, what you did and the findings?
The study followed a cohort of younger people over time to see if higher consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with overweight or obesity later in life, and also looked at maternal diet during pregnancy and early-life exposures, finding evidence of associations between UPF intake and increased obesity risk in children and, to a lesser but notable extent, in mothers.
Most replayed moment: How to Balance Sunlight and Suncream | Professor John McGrath
Q: How should we balance sun exposure with protection?
Aim for a middle ground where some sunlight is beneficial for mood and heart health, but protect skin through cleansing, moisturising, and applying sunscreen regularly, especially since SPF ratings are often calculated under laboratory conditions and real-world application is usually lighter.
Most replayed moment: How to Balance Sunlight and Suncream | Professor John McGrath
Q: What happens when sunlight hits our skin?
Sunlight damages the DNA in skin cells (DNA damage) and triggers the production of POMC, which is broken down into substances including endorphins that can influence mood and sensations, while also initiating tanning processes; in moderation, sunlight also offers cardiovascular benefits and mood enhancement.
What inflammation is really doing to your mind, body and 5 ways to protect your brain | Prof Ed Bullmore
Q: What role does the microbiome play in brain health and mood?
The microbiome can influence the immune response and inflammatory signaling, which in turn can affect brain function and mood; dietary changes that shift the microbiome may improve mental health over time.
