  • Would like to hear more

I’d like to hear thoughts on alternative approaches to assist in the medical intervention. I am curious to hear thoughts on regular treatments of NAD+, etc. along with thoughts on Vagus Nerve Stimulators for IBD.

Furthermore, I think when the diet isn’t addressed most believe it’s not considered important versus it being more of an individual’s trial and error. Today’s food is not what it once was and most have no nutritional education even at the most basic.

  • Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

I love this podcast! I have crohns , but I was just diagnosed with Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) and nutcracker syndrome. I was really hoping you could do an episode on SMAS, there is almost no information out there, and doctors treat us really bad for some reason. Every group I’ve joined, had the same story of not knowing who to go to or what to do! It has a death rate of 1 in 3. We should have more information about this. We are not too rare to care! We really really need answers ... more

  • Potential to be great

The host needs a microphone, it’s borderline unlistenable. Aside from that, the information is super useful and they do nice job making it patient-centric and not overly clinical. I listened to an episode about pediatric bowel issues and although it was good info they missed a huge opportunity to address what happens when kids need to be cleaned out, and didn’t tackle the Miralax controversy head on. If you know anything about constipated kids, it seems these doctors are NOT knowledgeable beca... more

  • “Actually you don’t need your colon”

    I’m sorry. WHAT?

The episode I listened to completely wrote off any sort of dietary interventions and only touted powerful drugs and surgery to remove a colon of someone with ulcerative colitis. He said “you actually don’t need a colon”, which is wild. There are hundreds of important functions that stem from processes in the colon. Work to rehabilitate and heal it before you go to immune suppressing drugs and removal.

    I’m stunned and saddened.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Advancements in Intestinal Transplants
Q: How common are intestinal transplants, and what is the patient journey from referral to post-operative life?
Intestinal transplants are relatively rare in the United States, with about 80-100 cases per year; most patients are referred by local physicians or discover options online, complete a two-month comprehensive evaluation, get listed, undergo transplant when organs are available, and then receive ongoing support to resume normal life.
Advancements in Intestinal Transplants
Q: What types of intestinal transplants exist, and how is the decision made between options?
There are isolated intestine transplants and multivisceral transplants that include organs such as the liver, pancreas, and colon; the choice depends on the extent of disease and the involvement of other organs, with some cases requiring combined approaches.
Advancements in Intestinal Transplants
Q: For listeners new to this topic, what is intestinal transplant and who needs one?
Intestinal transplantation is a life-saving option for patients with intestinal failure who cannot absorb nutrients adequately; it is considered when IV nutrition and medical management fail or lead to serious complications, and may involve isolated intestine or multivisceral transplantation when other organs (like the liver) are affected.
Chronic Pelvic Pain and the Effects on Digestive Health
Q: What should patients expect from treatment, especially when digestive symptoms are involved?
Treatment is individualized and multidisciplinary, encompassing gastroenterology input, gut-directed therapies, pelvic floor physical therapy, and consideration of brain-gut interactions to reduce overall pain and improve function.
Chronic Pelvic Pain and the Effects on Digestive Health
Q: How do you diagnose chronic pelvic pain and determine which specialists to involve?
Diagnosis hinges on a comprehensive evaluation, with imaging like ultrasounds and MRI for endometriosis, potential laparoscopy for definitive assessment, and collaboration with urology or other specialists to map the full scope of symptoms.
