Why Humanitarian Work Makes Us Better Orthopaedic Surgeons
Q: What inspired you to pursue humanitarian work in orthopedics and public health?
My passion started in college with volunteer opportunities and grew into a long-term commitment as I realized how essential local capacity, education, and sustainable care are to improving outcomes in underserved areas.
Research in Residency
Q: How do you get medical students' residents involved and excited and inspire them to do good work and good research?
Focus on recognizing sparks and intrinsic drive in individuals, provide support and mentorship, and create opportunities where students can contribute meaningfully, even if they start with smaller projects or meet at conferences to collaborate.
Prepare Your Career for Takeoff with AAOS Launchpad
Q: What is the Launchpad experience for those unfamiliar with the product?
The Launchpad is a 20-month program for fifth-year residents to receive mentoring from both early and late career physicians, with practical insights, leadership training, board preparation resources, and networking opportunities designed to smooth the transition from residency to practice.
Establishing Yourself as a Leader During Residency
Q: How do you balance being a leader and a friend to your team?
Lead with a clear vision and speak with authority as program director in work settings, while maintaining personal relationships outside of work; set expectations upfront and separate roles to sustain respect and effective leadership.
Establishing Yourself as a Leader During Residency
Q: How should a junior resident prepare to become a strong chief resident later on?
Be very organized, excel in exams and research, be well prepared for rounds and case discussions, know indications and anatomy, and progressively take on more responsibility as you advance from PGY-2 to PGY-5 with the attending overseeing and guiding but not micromanaging.
