  • The Best Medicine

The principles of WCI are the best medicine for physician burnout. With all due respect to wellness talks, yoga and meditation, taking charge of your finances is by far the most beneficial burnout buster. Dr. Dahle and the WCI team will show you the simple steps necessary to control your financial life rather than having money problems control you. Burned out physicians, you need this podcast and WCI in general.

  • Great insight

This is a wonderful podcast with a lot of information and isn’t long a drawn out like other finance podcast.s. Please keep giving us episodes with other providers and healthcare support like the most recent with a anesthesia assistant. As a non physician healthcare provider, I came out of school with six figures in debt and not a $400k shovel. Let’s hear from more of us who also wear white coats! Great show!!!!

  • I was so angry but then…

For the first 10 years of my career after finishing Internal Medicine

residency I was working for another doctor as a W-2 employee. Then in

2015 | started working for myself as an owner of my small primary care practice. When I had to pay my first tax bill, I was in disbelief. Then it turned into anger and frustration:

I was in my early 40s and I had never learned or been exposed to basic investing and personal finance topics. I immediately started searching on how to lower my tax bill and to be... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

WCI #472: Financial Questions New and Established Doctors Face
Q: Should residents refinance a physician loan mortgage two and a half years before graduating, given current favorable rates but short time horizon?
The adviser suggests renting during residency as the default, emphasizes that refinance makes sense only if it yields meaningful savings before the loan is paid off, and notes that no-cost refinances can be attractive if they truly lower costs without extending payoff time; otherwise, it may not be worth the hassle.
MtoM #275: How a Small-Town Doctor Built a Million-Dollar Portfolio
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering practicing in a rural area, particularly in the Midwest?
Embrace geographic arbitrage and focus on the big picture: lower cost of living, close-knit professional networks, and the potential to save and invest aggressively. Leverage loan programs and employer benefits, and build a retirement plan early with available options like 403(b), 457, and Roth accounts.
WCI #470: How to Maximize the Impact of Your Charitable Giving
Q: What are the pledge options and why would someone choose them?
The philanthropy pledge offers a 10% income pledge, a 1% trial pledge (for six months), and a wealth pledge based on a portion of overall portfolio. The options allow people at different financial stages to begin giving, experiment, and scale up as they gain confidence and resources.
WCI #470: How to Maximize the Impact of Your Charitable Giving
Q: How do you decide how much to give and to whom?
She describes starting with 5% and gradually increasing to 10%, guided by religious teachings, personal values, and a habit-forming framework. She uses research and impact data to evaluate charities, preferring evidence of outcomes over mere fundraising appeal, and stresses the importance of a proactive annual giving plan with room for reactive checks.
WCI #470: How to Maximize the Impact of Your Charitable Giving
Q: Why is giving such an important part of your life?
Rebecca explains that giving emerged from a sense of privilege and guilt during early retirement, which shifted to a purposeful use of money to help others. She emphasizes the moral imperative she feels to use wealth to make meaningful change and the personal fulfillment that comes from seeing real outcomes from charitable work.
