  • Hard Pass

I wanted to learn more about finance this year and came across this podcast. I have a little finance knowledge but thought this would help me learn even more now that I’m out of residency. I’ve always found the advice a little off but the Bitcoin episode was littered with falsities including saying NVIDIA trades on the S&P. That’s a rookie mistake. I’ll be seeking finance advice elsewhere.

Red Flags in Private Practice Job Offers
Q: What are the eight questions to evaluate ownership opportunities as a framework before signing?
The eight questions cover: (1) pre-ownership compensation, (2) length to ownership, (3) history of ownership offers, (4) what you can buy, (5) price to buy, (6) what owners are currently earning, (7) risk of private equity or hospital acquisition, and (8) exit strategy including rights and protections. This framework helps ensure clarity and alignment with long-term goals.
Red Flags in Private Practice Job Offers
Q: How does someone spot red flags in a partnership track before that stuff happens?
Focus on whether ownership has actually been offered to others recently, the history of past offers, and whether there is credible language or mechanisms (like an NDA and a defined equity path) that protect you if ownership is pursued. If multiple recent offers were declined or if the path to ownership is vague, that signals risk and should prompt stronger protections or negotiation.
New Attending Financial Checklist: Money Mistakes to Avoid
Q: What should new attendings do first in their financial plan regarding savings and retirement goals?
Identify your required annual savings to reach financial independence by your target age, then balance spending with debt repayment, insurance, and investment contributions to stay on track for that goal.
Should I Consolidate My Loans, PSLF, and Buying a Home
Q: Should I concatenate or consolidate my loans to start PSLF payments during residency?
No. Consolidating when you plan to pursue PSLF can remove eligibility for income-based repayment programs like IBR, which are essential for minimizing payments and maximizing eventual forgiveness. For fourth-year students, consolidating often eliminates the option to use IBR after July 2026, making PSLF harder to achieve and potentially costing tens of thousands in avoided subsidies.
Should You Rent or Sell Your House When You Move?
Q: What should a physician consider first when deciding to rent or sell the home when they move?
Start by clarifying the purpose of keeping the home (income, keeping a residence for future return, or purely as an investment) and then run the numbers with real costs like maintenance and property management, while also considering capital gains taxes and the Section 121 exclusion. Consider testing being a landlord for a short period if you're unsure.
