Reviews

4.8 out of 5 stars from 25 ratings
  • Inconsistent topics and focus

Topics are infrequently about improving the care of patients. Recent focus on equity and inclusion is another manifestation of social justice warriors taking over the practice of medicine and orthopedics. The problem is worse in Canada. Let’s focus on helping everyone get better and improving the care of patients through thoughtfully executed surgery. JBJS podcasts should focus on science and data instead of controversial social issues.

Bonus Episode! JBJS OrthoCorps: An Audio Archive of Stories from the Orthopaedic Community (Part 32)
Q: Dr. Guanciale, it's nice to have you here. Tell us who you are and what your specialty is, how long you've been involved with the American Orthopaedic Association.
Guanciale introduces himself as an orthopedic spine surgeon based in Cincinnati, recounting his long-standing involvement with MAOA and his role on the board.
Catching Up with special guest Jim Heckman (Editor Emeritus, JBJS)
Q: How did you handle the dual responsibilities of editor and CEO, and what were the key changes you implemented in editorial practice?
I balanced clinical duties with journal leadership, used strong internal support, and led major changes including electronic manuscript processing, the shift to evidence-based content, and the addition of formal methodological and statistical review to improve quality.
Catching Up with special guest Jim Heckman (Editor Emeritus, JBJS)
Q: What prompted you to move from being department chair to taking on the JBJS editor role in Boston, and what did you hope to change?
I wanted to bring a broader, more dynamic approach to the journal, combining editorial leadership with the business side to modernize the publication, introduce color and readership-friendly formats, and pursue a more evidence-based and timely review process.
Catching Up with special guest Sanjeev Sabharwal (Editor, JBJS Reviews)
Q: What steps should a young author take to decide if a topic is of interest to both them and the journal, and what should be included in an unsolicited manuscript proposal?
Ask the right questions at the outset, seek mentorship, conduct a targeted literature review, and include a short proposal with headings, a concise bibliography (about 10 key articles), and a one-liner describing what makes the manuscript different or novel, followed by assurance of a robust peer-review process.
Catching Up with special guest Sanjeev Sabharwal (Editor, JBJS Reviews)
Q: What would you say to a young author in our community who is considering submitting to JBJS Reviews and deciding whether it's worthwhile?
The guidance is to start with a focused, well-posed topic, perform a thorough literature search to identify unanswered questions or controversial angles, prepare a concise one-page proposal with a clear novel angle, and ensure a senior author acts as corresponding author to provide ownership and responsibility throughout the process.
