Reviews

4.8 out of 5 stars from 25 ratings
  • Inconsistent topics and focus

Topics are infrequently about improving the care of patients. Recent focus on equity and inclusion is another manifestation of social justice warriors taking over the practice of medicine and orthopedics. The problem is worse in Canada. Let’s focus on helping everyone get better and improving the care of patients through thoughtfully executed surgery. JBJS podcasts should focus on science and data instead of controversial social issues.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Evolution of Geriatric Surgery, with special guest Dr. Julie Switzer, MD
Q: How would you advise someone early in their career who is considering focusing on geriatric fracture care?
Focus on building collaboration beyond the orthopedics department, seek opportunities to learn perioperative care, and pursue fellowship pathways that formalize geriatric fracture care expertise.
Dsyphagia After Anterior Cervical Spine Surgery, with special guest Mark Pahuta
Q: Is this a clinically relevant question for your practice, and is a lumbar control group appropriate for comparison?
Marc suggests this is highly relevant for counseling patients and decision-making. He believes a matched cohort design is more appropriate than simply comparing to lumbar procedures, as it better isolates the effect of the anterior approach on dysphagia.
Bonus Episode! JBJS OrthoCorps: An Audio Archive of Stories from the Orthopaedic Community (Part 33)
Q: Was it Dick that nominated you to become part of this organization?
Yes, Andy Pollock and Anna Miller nominated him to join the organization.
Bonus Episode! JBJS OrthoCorps: An Audio Archive of Stories from the Orthopaedic Community (Part 32)
Q: Dr. Guanciale, it's nice to have you here. Tell us who you are and what your specialty is, how long you've been involved with the American Orthopaedic Association.
Guanciale introduces himself as an orthopedic spine surgeon based in Cincinnati, recounting his long-standing involvement with MAOA and his role on the board.
Catching Up with special guest Jim Heckman (Editor Emeritus, JBJS)
Q: How did you handle the dual responsibilities of editor and CEO, and what were the key changes you implemented in editorial practice?
I balanced clinical duties with journal leadership, used strong internal support, and led major changes including electronic manuscript processing, the shift to evidence-based content, and the addition of formal methodological and statistical review to improve quality.
