  • Need to improve communication

I really enjoy listening to episodes with guest speakers. I’ve been listening to this podcast since it came out. However anything run by Jake has too many “umms” after every sentence. It’s distracting and annoying, and makes me not want to listen to any of the survey recaps

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

John Gaglione: Powerlifting History, Home Gyms, Specialty Bars, Injury Prevention, Growing Strict Curl, More
Q: What are your thoughts on strict curl and how it fits into a home gym routine for broader fitness goals?
He argues strict curl is accessible, less systemically taxing, and can be trained in short cycles for notable strength gains; it complements other lifts, provides a goal-driven pathway for bodybuilders and non-lifters, and can be integrated with minimal equipment.
John Gaglione: Powerlifting History, Home Gyms, Specialty Bars, Injury Prevention, Growing Strict Curl, More
Q: What would you tell the average Joe about training for powerlifting versus general strength and health goals?
The guest emphasizes prioritizing strength as a foundation that supports bone density and overall performance, suggests focusing on big three lifts and a clear KPI, and recommends strategic variation with specialty bars to protect joints while maintaining progress.
John Gaglione: Powerlifting History, Home Gyms, Specialty Bars, Injury Prevention, Growing Strict Curl, More
Q: How has the powerlifting scene today compared to when you started, particularly around home gyms and accessibility?
He explains two schools of thought: the rise of dedicated powerlifting gyms with 24/7 access and advanced equipment, and the growth of well-equipped home gyms that emphasize community, safety, and targeted gear like specialty bars. He also notes the shift toward submaximal training and the benefit of living with a flexible, goal-driven program.
John Gaglione: Powerlifting History, Home Gyms, Specialty Bars, Injury Prevention, Growing Strict Curl, More
Q: Would you mind starting off by telling us about your story? Tell us what got you into powerlifting and maybe just a brief overview of the last 20 years.
John shares growing up as an athlete who found powerlifting after wrestling, notes his progression from local competitions to coaching top lifters, and highlights the importance of persistence, adapting training styles (from equipped gear to more varied, home-gym-friendly approaches), and mentoring younger lifters.
1:1 with the Creator of The Better-Fly
Q: Tell me about your decision to go to the Arnold.
The decision was a calculated leap to gain credibility, visibility, and real-world validation, with a signed contract that created a hard launch deadline and a plan to produce a large first batch for the expo.
