Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

They're Always in Control: A Therapist's 30-Year Study of Male Abusers
Q: What makes coercive control so dangerous compared to physical violence?
Coercive control operates in the mind and daily behavior, making it invisible and harder to prove, yet just as devastating; the abuse is ongoing and often unacknowledged by others, which compounds the harm.
They're Always in Control: A Therapist's 30-Year Study of Male Abusers
Q: How do abusers pick targets, and what signals do they look for in a potential partner?
Abusers quickly assess traits like kindness, loyalty, and truthfulness, and they use those signals to determine who is most susceptible to their control; they observe and record interactions to tailor their approach.
They're Always in Control: A Therapist's 30-Year Study of Male Abusers
Q: Before we get into the book, can you tell everybody a little bit about you, what you do, and how you got into studying male intimate abusers?
I shifted from a failed priestly path to counseling after personal experiences of abuse, and I began researching abuse to help families and especially the women affected, discovering early on that the dynamics weren't about losing control but about deliberate control and manipulation.
She Knew the Red Flags & Still Got Trapped: Dr. Kerry McAvoy's Narcissistic Abuse Story
Q: Can you tell us a high-level story about how you got into this work?
Dr. McAvoy recounts her career as a psychologist, the traumatic loss of her husband to cancer, and how those experiences deepened her interest in narcissistic abuse, complex trauma, and helping survivors understand coercive control.
Are You REALLY Codependent — Or Is It Something Deeper?
Q: Is every narcissistic relationship the result of a codependent entering the pattern, or can a codependent be with someone healthy?
Relationships are driven by unconscious relationship templates; while a codependent can meet a healthy partner, true health depends on the individual's inner work and ability to recognize and adjust their templates, not just chemistry.
