  • Brilliant

PTO has become one of my favorite podcasts, truly some of the best political and pop culture commentary out there. Listening from the U.S. I find it offers illuminating perspectives on both American politics and the UK. Alex himself is an extremely sharp guy with a great sense of humor and always asks the right questions. His guests are phenomenal. I always appreciate Seymour’s perspective as well as the cultural studies - ish takes on pop culture. The episode on Oasis was fantastic. Keep up the... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interregnum - Peace in the Gulf?
Q: What's your take on the credibility of the deal given its vagueness?
The deal is plausible as a temporary framework, but its long‑term credibility depends on future talks and the willingness of both sides to translate vague commitments into verifiable actions, especially on sanctions and nuclear provisions.
New York's rising socialist tide w/ Liza Featherstone
Q: Can you help to make sense of that contest for listeners who perhaps don't follow New York electoral politics?
Featherstone explains the difference in organizing models between the DSA and the Working Families Party, noting that DSA emphasizes on-the-ground organizing, labor roots, and a more fighter-like posture on issues such as Palestine, which contrasts with more traditional, more centralized nonprofit-backed campaigns. She also highlights labor union involvement and candidate selection from within the movement as essential for sustaining accountability and movement-building.
China and the US - a durable thaw? w/ Tobita Chow and Jake Werner
Q: Would you say parity between the US and China has shifted in a meaningful way?
The guests discuss that not a new structural parity, but a shift in how power is exercised and perceived, with China aiming for stability and the US seeking to maintain leverage through mechanisms like rare earths and tech controls, while acknowledging the limits of both sides.
China and the US - a durable thaw? w/ Tobita Chow and Jake Werner
Q: Yeah, Jake, would you add anything to that?
Jake Werner emphasizes that maintaining continuity with prior discussions, and recognizing the nuanced, sometimes divergent readouts of meetings, is central to understanding the current pause in tensions rather than a breakthrough in policy.
[UNLOCKED] China and the Iran war w/ William Figueroa
Q: How does the Iran–Saudi rapprochement compare to China's involvement in Iran negotiations?
In the Iran–Saudi talks, China's mediating role was more pronounced and proactive, whereas in the Iran–US/Israel war context, China acts more as a facilitator to de-escalate and keep channels open rather than forcing a deal.
