  • Imperial left

Been a listener for some time now and I can’t believe the length this show goes to soft paddle imperial propaganda. It sure is easy to singsong western style democracy (even though the famous 2014 study showed that in the U.S. ordinary ppl practically have 0 influence on policy) and condemn “authoritarian states” when you don’t have to face the wrath of a nuclear power that sanctions, coups, invades, and bombs with no impunity.

  • Disappointed in new Venezuela coverage

I usually like The Dig, and liked the episode on Vz from a few years ago, but the new ep is very disappointing. Constantly referencing stolen elections and authoritarianism with no pushback and no nuance. Especially given recent events it is really disappointing to see how anti-Maduro and anti-PSUV this episode was. I hope we can get an ep in the future that takes a more balanced approach to this

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rogue Elephant w/ Paul Heideman
Q: Can you describe Gingrich's impact on big money and party organization in the 1990s?
Gingrich built a fundraising network separate from the official party, using a PAC to connect politicians with funders, which redefined leadership pathways and made fundraising a key gatekeeper for power.
Primary Strategy w/ Geoff Simpson
Q: How do you view the role of Bernie Sanders in energizing the left and shaping future campaigns?
Bernie set an enduring template for a left-visioned campaign that generates grassroots energy and a durable infrastructure; his presence helps heighten contradictions within the party and signals the potential to run coordinated campaigns that go beyond single races, especially in 2028 as a centerpiece for a broader strategy.
Primary Strategy w/ Geoff Simpson
Q: What were the main lessons from the 2020 and 2022 cycles for Justice Democrats?
Key lessons included the need to better support incumbents against corporate money, to build a long-term infrastructure for candidate recruitment and fundraising, and to expose and counter donor-funded attack machines like AIPAC and crypto-backed campaigns, while recognizing the limits of ad-heavy campaigns without strong local organization.
Primary Strategy w/ Geoff Simpson
Q: Why is primaries within the Democratic Party considered an important tactic for rebuilding left-wing power?
Primaries allow the left to challenge corporate-friendly incumbents, push for a bold policy agenda, and demonstrate the viability of a mass-mmovement-based approach beyond traditional electioneering, thereby realigning the base and infrastructure for future gains.
The Commons w/ Peter Linebaugh
Q: How did mass enclosures reshape English society and political economy?
Mass enclosures drastically altered the landscape and social structures in England, creating a class of landless laborers and redefining property rights through legislative measures.
