  • Slop

This is controlled opposition. Not even remotely close to a reasonable political analysis. An intellectually, dishonest neo liberal podcast. Don’t waste your time.

  • Compatible Left

The Dig, Jacobin Radio, Confronting Capitalism, now Behind the News—the characterization of Maduro and Bolivarian revolution is no different from corporate media’s distortion, when there are empirical evidence and independent journalism to refute such lies. Replying on the same “experts” further siloed the view.

Suzi has always been a bit sus (given her one-sided accounts of Russia), but the others also unveiled to be biased unfortunately confirms warnings I dismissed before.

  • Very educational for building class consciousness

Really enjoy this podcast overall. Very knowledgeable hosts and guests that bring a valuable mix of socialist perspectives across disciplines: history, economics, political science, labor organizing etc. Appreciate that it also gets beyond theory to questions of building political power to advance a people-focused agenda.

Areas for improvement: I did find it a little hard to connect with at first…feels like there are 4 podcasts in one. Might be worth separating at least into 2 separate shows. ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jacobin Radio: The People’s World Cup
Q: What player are you looking forward to shining and making a magical impression in this World Cup?
Mel highlights Guillermo Ochoa as a standout goalkeeper with a record sixth World Cup, plus emergent young talents like Laminia Moll from Spain, suggesting a mix of veteran leadership and youthful potential could define the tournament.
Behind the News: How Cops Rose Above the Law w/ Stuart Schrader
Q: How did the Detroit police union example illustrate the broader trajectory of policing politics in the U.S., and what consequences did it have for liberal governance?
The Detroit example shows the union going to war with a liberal local government, leveraging mass mobilization and political antagonism to push back against reforms associated with the Great Society, thereby signaling a template for how unions could undermine liberal projects and influence urban policy for decades.
Behind the News: How Cops Rose Above the Law w/ Stuart Schrader
Q: First, a look at cop power and civilian oversight—how did police unions evolve from local clubs into national political actors?
Schrader explains that the shift occurred through legal changes in public sector unionization, strategic alliances with political figures (notably figures like Mario Biagi and Joe Biden), and a pattern of aggressive mobilization that connected bargaining with broader ideological battles, culminating in a durable, militant rank-and-file culture that could press its demands in both local and national arenas.
Confronting Capitalism: The Politics of Mass Deportation
Q: What does a left-leaning approach to immigration policy look like in practical terms, especially regarding workers' rights and open borders versus regulated borders?
A practical approach would involve liberal regulation—allowing as many people in as the infrastructure can absorb—coupled with strong labor protections, a robust welfare state, and policies that empower workers to organize, which can reduce scapegoating and promote humane treatment of migrants.
Confronting Capitalism: The Politics of Mass Deportation
Q: Can you summarize how the modern U.S. immigration system evolved from earlier open-era policies to the quota-based regime of the 1920s and the current family-based system?
The system shifted from a general assumption of admission to a tightly controlled regime with quotas pegged to existing population shares, then moved toward a family-reunification bias in the 1960s, with enforcement and a militarized border expanding since the 1980s, while the humanitarian track developed later in response to global crises.
