  • Sheila Fitzpatrick in the Soviet archives

What a thrill to listen to a long and thoughtful conversation with Sheila Fitzpatrick! Some ten years ago I wrote my masters thesis on Lunacharsky and the Soviet Theater. Sheila Fitzpatrick’s book on the Commissariat of Enlightenment, as well as her other books on the early days of the USSR were an inspiration and guide for me. Thank you.

  • Interview with N.A.

I throughly enjoyed the interview with Neal Asherson. What a life! What wonderful insights! He brought me back to periods of my youth and the world events that shaped me as a political person in the 80s and 90s. My thanks to the Neal and the LRB for all you do. I recently renewed my subscription to the LRB and am grateful to continue my support of your fine work.

  • Please stop

Can you please go back to talking about books, and stop making every other podcast about Jews? And please stop dismissing the experience of Jewish students. You have not stepped in our shoes - I’m talking to you, Peter Beinart - you don’t know whether our experiences constitute antisemitism or not. But you just assume that we “feel” or perceive antisemitism when it’s not really that. That may be the case for some people, but it is not the case for all. There IS a strain of antisemitism on the ra... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Selling the Manosphere
Q: Where do you think the Manosphere is going?
The future remains uncertain, but it's important to note that the messages they propagate are anchored in presenting a false sense of agency for men, which may not hold up in reality.
Selling the Manosphere
Q: What makes Andrew Tate such a popular figure in the Manosphere?
His appeal lies in his ability to generate attention through extreme rhetoric, embodying the influence of the Manosphere while leveraging social media effectively.
Selling the Manosphere
Q: Could you just give me a brief history of the Manosphere?
The Manosphere's origins are linked to second-wave feminism, evolving from initial thoughts of male liberation into a backlash creating a narrative of victimization among men, especially as ideas moved online.
The Psychology of Tennis
Q: What's it like being a tennis parent?
It's revelatory because I was very unsporty, and the competitive nature of the environment is astonishing.
Israel's War of Opportunity
Q: How do Iranians interpret the involvement of the United States, Trump's decision to go to war?
Their understanding is evolving; previously seen as an abstract narrative, now it feels personal and immediate due to the conflict's proximity.
