  • Sarah Stein Lubrano

I found Dr Lubrano fascinating, and wanted to hear more about her research, books and her conclusions about life, rather than listen to the interviewer hold forth interminably. She tried valiantly to raise the topic of her new book but he ignored every opportunity. What a shame..

  • An insult to LRB’s legacy

One of your hosts, Adam S——, is an American, New York based music critic who has no connection to London or the UK, and no expertise in the MENA region, but for some reason moonlights for LRB as a “sophisticated” orientalist pundit in the vein of Bernard Lewis, decoding what he sees as the barbaric Arabs and Iranians for the white western warmonger class of which he is a part. S—— has spent his entire recent career trying to twist the anticolonial writings of Fanon and demonizing resistance stru... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

On Politics: The Pope and the President
Q: What is the significance of just war theory in the current context, and how do European and North American Catholic opinions diverge?
Massimo outlines the doctrinal criteria of just war theory, highlighting how post-1945 shifts in Europe de-emphasize war while North American experiences sustain it, leading to ongoing debates about military action and moral legitimacy within the Church.
On Politics: The Pope and the President
Q: Massimo, if I can start with you, why has this conflict between the Pope and American politics blown up so substantially?
Massimo explains that a crescendo built over years, with the Vatican mobilizing diplomats and laity in unprecedented ways, reflecting a shift from monarchical papacy to a global mediator while also noting how American public life now confronts a reevaluation of the church's role.
The War in Lebanon
Q: Is it simply the destruction of Hizbullah? Is it the further weakening of Lebanon? Is it expansion to the Litani? What's your sense of Israel's strategy here?
Israel's strategy appears to be a mix of depopulating border areas, creating a security buffer, and leveraging its technological edge to strike and surveil from the air, while attempting to pressure internal dynamics in Lebanon to weaken Hizbullah and disarmament prospects.
On Politics: Why you can’t change someone’s mind
Q: What is to be done?
The guest emphasizes rebuilding social infrastructures, fostering respectful, ongoing engagement, and creating spaces for shared goals and social accountability beyond mere argument, including long-term collective action and responsible institutions.
On Politics: Why you can’t change someone’s mind
Q: What did you last change your mind about?
The guest describes becoming more open to a positive vision of AI and recognizing its potential when used to compensate cognitive gaps, while acknowledging many structural risks; the shift is toward a nuanced, hopeful view rather than pure technophobia.
