  • Tooze self-admiration

The material is consistently fascinating. The format is off-putting: sycophantic, obviously pre-planned questions allowing Tooze to lecture at length. Tooze oozes egotism and self-admiration from every pore, and his preening need for admiration and unearned self-confidence (for many of his opinions are just hot takes, not even half thought through) distract from the genuinely interesting subjects.

  • Re: your observation that 90% of Canadians live near the US border

Some years ago, I saw a map of Canada with a single black line stretching from Vancouver to New Brunswick. The explanation for the black line was that 90% of Canadians live within 50 miles of the trans Canadian railway. A single major railway system located within 50 miles. of almost all of Canada‘s population and businesses must be a large benefit for supply chain issues. I love your podcast and explanations of complicated economic issues.

World War II Miniseries: Part 3
Q: Should we think of the Holocaust as historically unique?
While historical uniqueness is a sensitive issue, the Holocaust stands out for its deliberate and comprehensive destructiveness, and its moral weight is central to modern understanding of human rights.
World War II Miniseries: Part 3
Q: How do we think about the Holocaust as part of a settler colonial project?
The Holocaust can be seen as part of a dual project of extermination and settler colonialism, particularly in the East where the extermination of the Jewish population precedes the settlement of German populations.
World War II Miniseries: Part 3
Q: Did the genocide ultimately divert resources from the Nazi war?
The Holocaust did not divert substantial resources from the Nazi war effort; it was conducted with resources broadly available in home base.
The U.S.-China Economic Relationship
Q: What explains the deep link between American farms and China?
American agriculture exports significantly to China, making China the largest market for U.S. agricultural products like soy and corn, driven by the disparity in land and the increasing meat consumption in China.
Trump's Economy
Q: What kind of light does Trump's trade policy shed on the broader post-neoliberal project?
Trump's policies may represent an anti-PMC sentiment, and his approach is seen as a thuggish and punitive response to neoliberalism, differing from the technocratic reforms proposed by Bidenomics.
