  • Lib-chamber

Not all that surprising given how much high esteem the host holds for neocons/neolibs like Ezra Klein and Fareed Zakaria, but still embarrassing to hear his level of ignorance of US foreign conducts since WWII.

I wouldn’t be surprised that Bessner was rolling his eyes inside given his bluntness on his own show.

  • Sino-centric views

Discussions are well organized and rational. Relevant topics with good details.

But listeners should be aware that the unspoken tone of the show is that China is an exceptional nation, US should not pursue its own interests if that conflicts with Chinese interests.

I listen to this primarily to understand ‘how enemy thinks.’

  • Amazing podcast!

I’d never heard of the sinica podcast until it was mentioned on a video from the Chinese cooking demystified channel on YouTube and decided to take a listen. I left the podcast so excited to explore all of the things they discussed, and some of the comments they only made in passing. China has such a fascinating and amazing history and culture. I’m glad there are podcast and resources like this and Chinese cooking demystified that help to further discovery and understanding.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Governing Digital China, with Daniela Stockmann and Ting Luo
Q: Can you explain popular corporatism and what distinguishes it from a simple digital authoritarian framework?
Popular corporatism emphasizes a triangle that includes the state, platform firms, and ordinary users, where firms become consultants or insiders leveraging data to aid the state, and where the state remains the driver but relies on firms to implement and tailor governance in practice.
Governing Digital China, with Daniela Stockmann and Ting Luo
Q: Danie, first question to you. You guys opened the book with a concept you call the digital dilemma—what are the key benefits for the party state from digitalization, and what are the political risks?
The political risks include possible misinformation, online hate speech, and potential domestic destabilization, while benefits lie in using digital tools for governance, data-driven policy, and economic growth; the relationship is managed through a balance of state power, corporate capability, and citizen data usage.
Kyle Chan on the Great Reversal in Global Technology Flows
Q: Are there particular habits of mind, cognitive styles, analytical tools that have mattered for the kind of work that you do?
Once you start pulling out a certain thread and have a systems level approach, you see how it all stitches together.
Kyle Chan on the Great Reversal in Global Technology Flows
Q: How did you become Kyle Chan?
My interest in all this actually comes from an interest in development. Countries want to get richer, become more educated, and how to obtain public goods is crucial.
Uneasy Calm: Ryan Hass on Three Pathways for U.S.-China Relations Under Trump
Q: What would tell listeners to focus on to assess which scenario we're actually in?
They should watch the frequency of interaction between the two leaders and how well the U.S. builds stockpiles to reduce vulnerability.
