  • Lib-chamber

Not all that surprising given how much high esteem the host holds for neocons/neolibs like Ezra Klein and Fareed Zakaria, but still embarrassing to hear his level of ignorance of US foreign conducts since WWII.

I wouldn’t be surprised that Bessner was rolling his eyes inside given his bluntness on his own show.

  • Sino-centric views

Discussions are well organized and rational. Relevant topics with good details.

But listeners should be aware that the unspoken tone of the show is that China is an exceptional nation, US should not pursue its own interests if that conflicts with Chinese interests.

I listen to this primarily to understand ‘how enemy thinks.’

  • Amazing podcast!

I’d never heard of the sinica podcast until it was mentioned on a video from the Chinese cooking demystified channel on YouTube and decided to take a listen. I left the podcast so excited to explore all of the things they discussed, and some of the comments they only made in passing. China has such a fascinating and amazing history and culture. I’m glad there are podcast and resources like this and Chinese cooking demystified that help to further discovery and understanding.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Spain's China Gambit: Pedro Sánchez, Strategic Autonomy, and the European Turn to Beijing — with Mario Esteban Rodríguez
Q: What are the domestic political drivers behind Spain's China policy?
Domestic politics, including coalition dynamics, regional interests, and public opinion on international law and EU coordination, push the government toward a consistent, rules-based engagement with China even when it diverges from traditional allies on specific issues.
Spain's China Gambit: Pedro Sánchez, Strategic Autonomy, and the European Turn to Beijing — with Mario Esteban Rodríguez
Q: How does Sánchez's policy compare to Merkel's playbook?
There are continuities—trade-focused engagement and high-level diplomacy—but Sánchez is operating in a context of COVID, a no-limits Russian-Chinese dynamic, and a larger EU debate about strategic autonomy, which makes his stance more assertive on Europe's role and on questioning Western insularity.
Spain's China Gambit: Pedro Sánchez, Strategic Autonomy, and the European Turn to Beijing — with Mario Esteban Rodríguez
Q: What best characterizes Sánchez's approach to China?
The approach is pragmatic and consistent, prioritizing high-level engagement and economic diplomacy while navigating a multipolar world; it blends realism about China's system with a belief in multilateralism and Europe's own strategic autonomy.
Is China Trying to Sever Plato from NATO? Chang Che on Beijing's Embrace of the Greco-Roman Classics
Q: What does the Xi Jinping letter to Greek scholars suggest about the state's motive in promoting classical studies?
It frames China and Greece as mutual civilizational partners, suggesting a shift away from a Western liberal order toward a Sino-Greek axis, with ancient Greece used as a civilizational ally rather than a shared political framework, though the exact motives remain uncertain and debated.
Is China Trying to Sever Plato from NATO? Chang Che on Beijing's Embrace of the Greco-Roman Classics
Q: Where did this interest in the Greco-Roman world begin for you, Chang Che?
The simple answer is that I studied Latin and was drawn to ancient philosophy, with Charlottesville and other American moments influencing the context; the contextual answer is that moving to China during the height of decoupling sparked a real interest in how classicists were returning to China and shaping discussion there.
