  • Not the same without Jeremy

Sadly, this show has grown a long way from its roots as the best“local” China podcast… to become essentially a show about geopolitics aimed an audience that might consider Ezra Klein to be an “intellectual” 🥱

  • Panda Hugging Fest

This show still represents view points rarely heard in main stream media but Kaiser doesn’t even pretend to be balanced anymore. He’s pro-China on all issues all the time. As such, he’s lost objectivity and his views of what Chinese people are truly thinking can no longer be counted on. He gets 4 stars for being different.

  • Awesome show!

Really glad your podcast is still around and kicking- hopefully for a long time to come! Thanks for bringing some balance to very biased political views. Jiayoh!

  • More light, less heat

I only recently discovered Sinica podcast, but it has quickly become indispensable to my media consumption regimen. Kaiser purports to offer “more light and less heat”in thinking about China today, and he delivers on that promise. His perspectives and interviews are a tonic offering relief from the hype and groupthink that so often typifies European and American engagement with China. As an academic who specializes in the study of early China but, being employed at a public university, whose tea... more

  • Lib-chamber

Not all that surprising given how much high esteem the host holds for neocons/neolibs like Ezra Klein and Fareed Zakaria, but still embarrassing to hear his level of ignorance of US foreign conducts since WWII.

I wouldn’t be surprised that Bessner was rolling his eyes inside given his bluntness on his own show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Texas Paradox: How the Most Anti-China State Is Building America's China Capacity
Q: Why is there resistance to language and China-education initiatives at the national level?
Because education policy is decentralized, budget constraints exist, and there's political risk in backing programs perceived as pro-China; a national-level push requires political courage and vision, which is currently lacking.
The Texas Paradox: How the Most Anti-China State Is Building America's China Capacity
Q: Is constructive strategic stability a practical framework or just diplomacy-speak?
It can be a useful guiding principle if it translates into concrete policy decisions and actions, not just language; without implementation, it remains rhetoric.
The Texas Paradox: How the Most Anti-China State Is Building America's China Capacity
Q: What would need to change in Washington to make language-capacity efforts like IL Texas scalable nationwide?
A sustained national strategy with funding, centralized accountability, and a coherent long-term plan for language education that goes beyond isolated programs and actually scales to all states, plus systemic support for sending students overseas and building a multi-layered education-to-service pipeline.
To Rule All Under Heaven: Andrew Meyer on His New Popular History of the Warring States
Q: What was the order the Warring States actually overthrew, and what did the period replace it with?
The Warring States revolution ended the Zhou Dynasty and replaced its hereditary aristocratic order with a centralized, literati-influenced, meritocratic administrative framework that eventually became the model for the imperial bureaucratic state.
Spain's China Gambit: Pedro Sánchez, Strategic Autonomy, and the European Turn to Beijing — with Mario Esteban Rodríguez
Q: What are the domestic political drivers behind Spain's China policy?
Domestic politics, including coalition dynamics, regional interests, and public opinion on international law and EU coordination, push the government toward a consistent, rules-based engagement with China even when it diverges from traditional allies on specific issues.
