  • "At a time that Israel was committing War crimes"?! Not 20 minutes into this and I am already tired of hearing him. This is such a biased and absolutely bogus interview. Clearly he has no knowledge of international law commensurate with the position he takes as an expert on this subject.

  • Interview with C. Freeland

It is always interesting to listen to European and Canadian politicians talk about NATO and relations with the U.S. Although Freeland was closer to the mark, she missed it. In short flattery worked with Obama and Biden. It has failed with Trump. Trump called out the Europeans for the decades long scam on the U.S. taxpayers where Europe builds repressive welfare states and the U.S. pays for the defense of Europe. The Europeans have completely failed to convince Americans of the value of NATO and ... more

  • Consistent Excellence

This is a growingly difficult, and important, time in international relations discourse. Far too often I have seen the discourse surrounding our current administration — the most costly and consequential of my lifetime — being boiled down to oversimplified punditry that reiterates what most educated people already know. The Foreign Affairs Interview is one of the few shows I’ve seen that regularly employs true international relations theory to shine light on the fault lines of this administratio... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

America’s War of Choice on Iran
Q: What would you tell President Trump now about the best course forward given what we know at this moment?
Swanson suggests aiming for a negotiated settlement that focuses on nuclear and ballistic missile constraints, while offering targeted sanctions relief and a framework for a ceasefire, potentially re-opening talks to align incentives for de-escalation and to manage expectations about what a long-term agreement could look like.
America’s War of Choice on Iran
Q: Could you just in very broad strokes explain sort of what your role was most recently in the Trump administration and especially in terms of the negotiations with Iran?
Swanson explains a long career handling Iran policy, noting his role on the Iran policy front during the Trump administration involved a script of limited meetings and input from a few advisors, with the core aim of assessing whether a new deal could be feasible, while acknowledging the overall decision-making process was less centralized than in earlier administrations.
America the Predatory Hegemon
Q: Is there a useful corrective in U.S.-China relations that could balance competition with cooperation?
A wary, balanced approach where competition is acknowledged, cooperation is pursued where possible, and strategic patience is exercised to avoid destabilizing the global order while protecting core interests.
America the Predatory Hegemon
Q: How should the United States restore trust and multilateralism after a period of predatory behavior?
Restore trust by recommitting to multilateralism, keeping promises, and renegotiating deals when mutually beneficial, while resisting constant shifting of expectations and rebuilding alliances through consistent, predictable policies.
America the Predatory Hegemon
Q: What in American foreign policy, especially post-Cold War, accounts for the rise of Trumpism in your view?
Trumpism can be viewed as a predictable reaction to the excesses of hyper-globalization and the liberal order, amplified by a desire to turn back established norms and distrust of the deep state, leading to a more transactional, unilateral approach.
