  • Content great, audio shocking

    Love this pod. Great discussions.

Drives me insane that every episode has a different audio quality. This week’s ep, the guy sounds underwater.

Makes my heart sink when a new ep is up because I’ll know I have to sit through bad recording.

  • Leaving the building…

After sticking with this for nearly a year, I am now a “former“ listener/reader. I find that the quality varies enormously, and that the topic selection lacks coherence. Perhaps most disturbing of all is that when I try to listen in order to be able to do other things simultaneously, I am assaulted by a host who sounds like a high school sophomore trying to frame a thought or a sentence with as many “…..like” phrases as possible. It makes my head hurt. None of my adult children speak that way be... more

  • Thought provoking

The range of topic is indeed wild. The last episode “Dissent from Moscow to Beijing” was really good.

  • Excellent podcast with thoughtful host who sometimes strays too far

Update 2 (June 2025): the Transistor Radio/SemiAnalysis guys are torturous to listen to. Incoherent memespeak with very little value.

Update: ChinaTalk is now barely about China and much more about AI, US defense policy, and Jordan’s other assorted interests. Podcasts evolve, but the show no longer does what it says on the tin. Worse, Jordan rarely stops to explain the acronyms and tech jargon he’s using, which a China watcher who isn’t an AI expert shouldn’t be expected to know.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

War in the Pacific with Ian Toll
Q: What were some themes you wanted to emphasize that you felt were different from Morrison's work?
I wanted to combine the grand strategy with the experiences of ordinary soldiers and sailors, including the impact of military politics on decisions.
NVIDIA GPU Black Market Smuggling
Q: What motivated you to try to trace the GPU smuggling supply chain from the US into China?
I saw a Reuters story about the concept of a GPU black market, which is really compelling and dystopian.
Dissent from Moscow to Beijing
Q: What were the main themes of your book?
The book explores the Soviet dissident movement, focusing on its key figures, their strategies for advocating civil rights under an oppressive regime, and drawing parallels with contemporary movements in China.
Xi Zhongxun: The Party's Interests Come First
Q: How do you define the purpose of this book?
There are three purposes: to value the past, to understand authoritarian politics, and to facilitate multiple interpretations.
Are We Cooked? Q2 Check In
Q: How's China? Has China done anything right over the last three months?
Not enough to change a 10 year horizon.
