  • The space program

Jordan, a few years back I heard you ask a guest, “how can I grow China Talk?” That day I didn’t think you would last as a podcaster.

Today, the quality of people you are able to come on the show is amazing.

Your ability to drop leading questions and the shut up is remarkable.

Congratulations, I look forward to each of your podcasts. 2nd breakfast is genius.

  • No podcast episode should ever be released with edits that cut a speaker mid thought. Points off for that.

  • Content great, audio shocking

    Love this pod. Great discussions.

Drives me insane that every episode has a different audio quality. This week’s ep, the guy sounds underwater.

Makes my heart sink when a new ep is up because I’ll know I have to sit through bad recording.

  • Leaving the building…

After sticking with this for nearly a year, I am now a “former“ listener/reader. I find that the quality varies enormously, and that the topic selection lacks coherence. Perhaps most disturbing of all is that when I try to listen in order to be able to do other things simultaneously, I am assaulted by a host who sounds like a high school sophomore trying to frame a thought or a sentence with as many “…..like” phrases as possible. It makes my head hurt. None of my adult children speak that way be... more

  • Thought provoking

The range of topic is indeed wild. The last episode “Dissent from Moscow to Beijing” was really good.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jen Pahlka on an Optimistic Vision for Government Renewal!
Q: Why is now the right time to push for this reform, and what role do states play?
States are agile pilots where you can experiment with new operating models, and success there can be scaled to the federal level. The ecosystem needs a coordinated effort across philanthropy, lawmakers, and media to build a constituency and demonstrate tangible improvements.
Jen Pahlka on an Optimistic Vision for Government Renewal!
Q: What is the Recoding America Fund and what is its vision for government?
The Recoding America Fund is a six-year initiative designed to catalyze civil service reform, modernize the operating model of government, and enable agencies to hire, manage, and retain the right people while leveraging AI and test-and-learn frameworks to improve policy outcomes.
The American Federal Civil Service: A History
Q: What happened during functional reorganization that broke the system?
Functional reorganization separated functions (research, grants, regulation) from subject-matter bureaus, creating a monoculture that pressured agencies to focus on grant distribution or regulation rather than applied, contextual work. This diminished the appeal to technical experts and weakened independent technical judgment.
Autonomous Weapons 101 + Anthropic v DoW
Q: So what else besides that directive is kind of keeping humans involved in these sorts of decisions?
Human involvement is anchored in broader law and policy beyond specific directives: formal use-of-force guidelines, international humanitarian law, and the risk-management framework that requires humans to validate reliability and legality before deploying autonomous weapons, with testing and evaluation playing a crucial role in ensuring systems perform as expected.
Autonomous Weapons 101 + Anthropic v DoW
Q: So, Mike, how would you characterise where the fear lies in the well-meaning researcher or head of an AI lab who thinks their technology used for certain types of autonomy would be a bad direction to go?
The fear often stems from imagining AI making life-and-death decisions without human judgment, but in practice there is already substantial autonomy in current systems; the bigger worry is ensuring that any new autonomy actually aligns with legal and ethical norms and that humans remain accountable for use of force.
