  • Up and down

The main episodes/interviews are very good. Skip all episodes with Dylan, Doug, and Jon (Transistor Radio), ModelTalk, etc.

  • Has taken an unfortunate turn

Cerca 2020, I was entering college and ChinaTalk became very important to me as a model for intellectual discourse, i.e. one that is nuanced, historically grounded, techno-optimistic, and curious. It lacks a lot of the pretension and credential-waving of most policy podcasts, like related shows from Lawfare. Jordan’s sensibility has always been an interesting mix of a Silicon Valley, liberal arts, and the D.C. policy world. I still think it’s a good podcast worth following. The coverage skewed U... more

  • Some treasures and some cringe

Other reviewers are right to complain about the lack of any “China” discussion in recent episodes, and the ear-gougingly unserious/juvenile “bro” attitudes in some episodes, particularly the ones with Dylan of SemiAnalysis and sometimes the Second Breakfast series. Recently, there’s a sort of unabashed US-nationalism that is very disquieting.

However, I’d encourage those with genuine intellectual curiosity about China to visit some of the episodes from previous years, and to subscribe the Subst... more

  • The space program

Jordan, a few years back I heard you ask a guest, “how can I grow China Talk?” That day I didn’t think you would last as a podcaster.

Today, the quality of people you are able to come on the show is amazing.

Your ability to drop leading questions and the shut up is remarkable.

Congratulations, I look forward to each of your podcasts. 2nd breakfast is genius.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Doing Big Things in Policy: It's All White Space
Q: How can someone with technical expertise start influencing policy without waiting to become the top expert?
By mobilizing knowledge, publishing accessible guides, engaging with policymakers through factoids and public writing, and collaborating with insiders who can turn ideas into concrete policy actions.
Doing Big Things in Policy: It's All White Space
Q: What are the indicators of success for the Horizon Fellowship and how have they evolved?
Success is seen in the ability to place fellows in government roles where they understand emerging tech and public service needs, while also iterating on selection criteria to balance ambition with humility and public service motivation.
Quantum 101
Q: Why should policymakers and investors care about quantum now?
Because quantum promises to unlock capabilities in chemistry, materials, and cryptography that are orders of magnitude beyond what classical computers can achieve, and it's approaching a point where economically useful, scalable systems could emerge within a few years. This creates both vast opportunities and urgent security considerations.
Jen Pahlka on an Optimistic Vision for Government Renewal!
Q: Why is now the right time to push for this reform, and what role do states play?
States are agile pilots where you can experiment with new operating models, and success there can be scaled to the federal level. The ecosystem needs a coordinated effort across philanthropy, lawmakers, and media to build a constituency and demonstrate tangible improvements.
Jen Pahlka on an Optimistic Vision for Government Renewal!
Q: What is the Recoding America Fund and what is its vision for government?
The Recoding America Fund is a six-year initiative designed to catalyze civil service reform, modernize the operating model of government, and enable agencies to hire, manage, and retain the right people while leveraging AI and test-and-learn frameworks to improve policy outcomes.
