  • Greatly Informative Pod

I especially enjoy the emergency pods and deep dives such as the Adam Curtis episode. But Jem, surely you can get a better logo?

  • My favourite podcast

I’m a fan of all Jeremy Gilbert’s podcasts, but this one is my favourite. I don’t know anywhere else where you can get everything from abstract philosophy to concrete election analysis and psephology - and sometimes in the same podcast. This podcast performs an important public service, bringing serious social theory and analysis outside of the academy and to everyone for free.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Superstition to Mythocracy with Yves Citton
Q: How does imagination figure in the way the power of the multitude becomes instituted as potestas?
Imagination frames causal chains into stories; by selecting certain causes and presenting them as decisive, people perceive and reproduce institutional power. Storytelling, narrative, and scripting mediate how power is organized, and scripting can strategically influence audiences to sustain or challenge existing power structures.
The Battle for Britain with John Clarke (part 3)
Q: Is conjunctural analysis just a momentary snapshot, or does it capture an ongoing accumulation of contradictions that can yield a new social configuration?
The guest suggests that while conjunctural analysis often describes a stalled or looping conjuncture, it can still illuminate the potential for new social configurations, especially when considering how populisms, reforms, and counter-mobilizations interact and how crises reshape political alignments.
The Battle For Britain with John Clarke (Part 2)
Q: Why do tabloids act as vernacular ventriloquists, and who are they ventriloquizing?
Tabloids reproduce a narrow, empire-centered, morally charged version of 'ordinary decency' that channels readers' anxieties toward tough-state, anti-immigrant stances, while marginalizing other legitimate working-class voices and solidarities.
What’s Feudal About ‘Technofeudalism’? With Eleanor Janega
Q: What do we mean by feudalism and how does it differ from modern capitalism?
The host and guest explain that feudalism was a varied, place-specific system centered on landholding, rights to resources, and labor obligations, not a uniform global pyramid; in contrast, modern capitalism is driven by wage labor, market exchange, and accumulation through production and innovation.
Religion and Politics Part 1
Q: Tell me, Jeremy, is socialism and religion or religiosity compatible?
The hosts acknowledge this is a complex question; while some traditions emphasize secularism, others see religious identity and socialist or anti-capitalist critique as intertwined, making simple compatibility or incompatibility insufficient. They imply that the relationship is negotiated within historical and political contexts rather than absolute.
