  • If you're not listening to Novara Media's output, do you even know what's going on in the world beyond the surface level? Literally the best journalism coming out of the UK today. I'm especially loving Do Your Own Research at the moment. Richard Hames is amazing and that episode with Marek Poliks nearly broke my brain (in the best possible way).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Do Your Own Research: The Scandal of the Century? Hondurasgate Explained w/ David Adler
Q: That's extremely thorough. Thank you for setting all of that in such rich detail. I want to go back to the moment at which we, that Juan Orlando Hernández is actually convicted of drug trafficking. Why did it happen, and why did it not deter the broader geopolitical play?
David Adler explains that the conviction and subsequent pardon are best understood as part of a larger, complex calculus within the US deep state and allied actors, where legal outcomes serve strategic aims and can be overridden by broader geopolitical interests or influence campaigns, rather than signaling a simple chain of accountability.
Downstream: Top Economist Exposes Inequality Death Spiral w/ Gabriel Zucman
Q: Can capitalism be fixed?
Yes, capitalism can be improved, and this episode argues for bold reforms like a progressive wealth tax to address inequality, fund public goods, and strengthen democracy, while acknowledging political and practical challenges.
Downstream: The Woman Who Invented Intersectionality w/ Kimberlé Crenshaw
Q: What is intersectionality and how did you first alight upon the term?
Crenshaw explains that intersectionality began as a remedial metaphor to help judges understand discrimination against Black women who face race and gender discrimination simultaneously, rather than as parallel, separate categories.
Downstream: The Most Influential Leftist You’ve Never Heard Of w/ Peter Mertens
Q: Could you quickly describe the Workers' Party of Belgium and your role within it?
Peter Mertens explains that the PTB is a socialist, Marxist party with a base-centered democratic centralist structure, aiming to unite the entire working class across urban and rural areas through practical organizing like medics for the people, while maintaining a critical distance from traditional parliamentary power.
Downstream: British Politics Is About to Collapse w/ James Meadway
Q: Has Keir Starmer's handling of the Iran war and related foreign policy surprised you?
Meadway argues the realignments and domestic political pressures are driving his stance; Starmer is navigating a difficult balance between public sentiment, alliance dynamics, and strategic restraint, with long-term implications for Labour's electoral position.
