  • If you're not listening to Novara Media's output, do you even know what's going on in the world beyond the surface level? Literally the best journalism coming out of the UK today. I'm especially loving Do Your Own Research at the moment. Richard Hames is amazing and that episode with Marek Poliks nearly broke my brain (in the best possible way).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Downstream: The West is Over. Here’s Why w/ Pankaj Mishra
Q: When did you sense a turning point in global media credibility, and how did Gaza influence your decision to create Equator?
The Gaza genocide and its coverage exposed deep structural weaknesses in Western media, catalyzing a move to build a platform that could offer more diverse perspectives and challenge entrenched narratives.
Downstream: The West is Over. Here’s Why w/ Pankaj Mishra
Q: What is Equator magazine, and why did you feel the need to produce this publication now in 2026?
Equator was founded as a response to the inadequacies and biases of mainstream Anglophone media, aiming to elevate global Anglophone thinkers and provide a more plural, critical view of world history and current affairs.
Downstream: The Middle Class Will Collapse Unless We Tax the Rich w/ Gary Stevenson
Q: What is the core reason you advocate for a wealth tax at the scale you propose?
The core reason is that wealth accumulation at the top outpaces economic growth and public resources, creating a structural imbalance where a tiny group owns most assets while the middle and working classes face deteriorating living standards. A targeted wealth tax would move wealth from the top back toward society, fund essential public services, and protect democracy from the corrosive effects of inequality.
Downstream: You Will Rent Forever. Here’s Why. w/ Peter Apps
Q: Are affordable housing targets effective, and what would work better?
Targets can help if paired with strict delivery mechanisms that ensure a meaningful portion of developments includes social or affordable housing, and if the land value is structured to subsidize these goals rather than allowing developers to negotiate away affordability for higher profits.
Downstream: You Will Rent Forever. Here’s Why. w/ Peter Apps
Q: What role did the 1988 Housing Act play in creating today's housing landscape?
The 1988 Act ended lifetime tenancy protections in the private sector, enabling six-month tenancies and frequent eviction, which allowed rents and prices to rise with less security for tenants and fostered a market where housing is treated as an asset class rather than a home.
