  • If you're not listening to Novara Media's output, do you even know what's going on in the world beyond the surface level? Literally the best journalism coming out of the UK today. I'm especially loving Do Your Own Research at the moment. Richard Hames is amazing and that episode with Marek Poliks nearly broke my brain (in the best possible way).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Downstream: The Most Influential Leftist You’ve Never Heard Of w/ Peter Mertens
Q: Could you quickly describe the Workers' Party of Belgium and your role within it?
Peter Mertens explains that the PTB is a socialist, Marxist party with a base-centered democratic centralist structure, aiming to unite the entire working class across urban and rural areas through practical organizing like medics for the people, while maintaining a critical distance from traditional parliamentary power.
Downstream: British Politics Is About to Collapse w/ James Meadway
Q: Has Keir Starmer's handling of the Iran war and related foreign policy surprised you?
Meadway argues the realignments and domestic political pressures are driving his stance; Starmer is navigating a difficult balance between public sentiment, alliance dynamics, and strategic restraint, with long-term implications for Labour's electoral position.
Do Your Own Research: You Can’t Have Billionaires and Democracy. Ancient Collapse Proves It. w/ Luke Kemp
Q: Can citizen assemblies meaningfully reduce risk, and what are their limits?
Citizen assemblies can enhance deliberation and reduce polarization, but implementing them at scale requires power and enforcement mechanisms; they are not a complete blueprint but a critical tool for democratizing decision making.
Do Your Own Research: You Can’t Have Billionaires and Democracy. Ancient Collapse Proves It. w/ Luke Kemp
Q: What does the Paleolithic era reveal about human cooperation and governance?
Evidence suggests relatively low violence and high potential for large-scale cooperation in the Paleolithic, challenging linear narratives of inevitable violence and supporting the idea that social structures like Goliaths are a later invention driven by resource and power dynamics.
Do Your Own Research: You Can’t Have Billionaires and Democracy. Ancient Collapse Proves It. w/ Luke Kemp
Q: How near are we to social collapse, and what should we be watching for?
The discussion frames collapse as a spectrum of pressures—nuclear risk, climate change, autocratic trends, and global inequality—rather than a single date, emphasizing the need to monitor multiple drivers and understand their interactions.
