  • London centric

All subjects are discussed through the prism of gentrified London. You need to get out of your bubbles and maybe hire a working class host based in the North. A case in point - Ash and Eliza talking about the “inheritocracy” as two people who have respectively inherited money to buy a place in London and an actual London house means they have a very rare and privileged experience compared to most people in the UK. I couldn’t take the discussion seriously.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Death in Westminster: 3. The City
Q: How has Westminster's ecosystem of think tanks shaped political power over time?
Think tanks like the IEA have quietly inserted themselves into the political process by hosting events and building networks that connect politicians with ideas, effectively moving the Overton window and guiding policy directions without direct political office themselves.
Downstream: The Next Shocks Will Hit Wealthy Countries Hardest. Here’s Why w/ John Rapley
Q: What motivated you to write Icarus Economics now, given discussions about the decline of the West?
The motivation was to explore whether wealth itself creates blind spots and vulnerabilities, and to examine how growth has restructured societies in ways that reduce resilience to future shocks.
Do Your Own Research: The Israel-ification of the US Military w/ Susannah Glickman
Q: What are the strategic implications of relying on drones and software over conventional hardware?
The discussion suggests drones and software offer speed and flexibility but come with governance, reliability, and strategic risks. The interview critiques the idea that tech alone can solve warfare challenges, stressing the importance of diplomacy, material capacity, and traditional industrial base strength.
Downstream: How the Democrats Abandoned Working People w/ Eric Schlosser
Q: What surprising thing did you learn about undocumented immigrants during your research?
Schlosser shares harrowing experiences of undocumented workers living in dire conditions, working long hours in hot fields to support their families, illustrating their invaluable contributions to society.
Downstream: How the Democrats Abandoned Working People w/ Eric Schlosser
Q: Why is it that anti-corporate messaging hasn't galvanized people to change their consumption habits, while other political causes have?
He attributes the disparity to the unequal marketing power of corporations compared to anti-corporate literature and acknowledges the potential for consumer boycotts if a significant portion of consumers engages in them.
