Owen Jones, journalist, author of Chavs and The Establishment, or "that left-wing idiot off the telly", is fed up with the establishment media. After all, it punches down, not up, blames minorities for all the problems in society, and, let's face it, often just parrots the government line. So this podcast is offering something different: speaking truth to power, giving the marginalised a voice, of... more

I often enjoy Jone’s commentary and agree with his politics broadly but the tone and style of this podcast (just being outraged into a microphone) just doesn’t provide much insight and is at times unpleasantly vituperative. The show works a lot better when he is interviewing someone or leading a discussion but those episodes are few and far between. There’s room for podcasts with the one-voice format but not in my view when the tone is so unrelentingly vitriolic.
Owen Jones might look ‘young’ but he brings a level of old-fashioned journalistic professionalism and integrity (facts, evidence, substantiation, rationality) that is rarely seen in MSM now. He also brings increasingly rare qualities - a clear-eyed moral worldview, humanity and compassion. Remember when journalists used to understand the difference between right and wrong? He has outstanding interviewees whom he allows to speak and it is a testament to the respect in which he is held that the... more
Owen brings facts and moral clarity. When the right are hysterical, Owen sounds like a raised eyebrow and a big belly sigh - “oh dear, let’s explain journalism again…”
I notice how although the reform candidate MG ‘speaks’ the language of the things that matter to people yet Nigel and the wider gang of expat landlords who jet in/land in Gorton + Denton from UAE/Saudi millionaire space have no intention of observing the reality of precarious homes/work on the quality of life/infrastructural/service investment needed: witness them having a secretive ‘rally’ with supporters on an industrial estate where they can’t be held to democratic account. The people who cau... more
Question about pubs feudalism + reform’s constituency (it’s in the malformed pub culture)
When we hear about new legislation about leasehold reform in property hooray why can’t it be applied as a lens on the medieval way pub land/pub estates operate on landlords and tenants? It seems to me that through all the penalties and charges imposed by the estate and landholders invisibly and unaccountably on the people who want to work in a neighbourhood setting that it creates a vassal/feudal culture th... more

The show tends to center on political strategy, policy debates, and power dynamics across the US and UK, with frequent dives into how media framing, electoral tactics, and leadership choices shape public discourse. Episodes often feature sharp, data-driven analysis of current events—ranging from progressive political movements and leadership contests to international conflicts and media narratives—interspersed with pointed critique of establishment politics. A notable strength is guest variety, including journalists, economists, pollsters, and activists, which helps explain complex issues from multiple perspectives while maintaining a candid, opinionated voice. Listeners who enjoy being challenged by provocative takes and clear stances on h... more
