Owen Jones, journalist, author of Chavs and The Establishment, or "that left-wing idiot off the telly", is fed up with the establishment media. After all, it punches down, not up, blames minorities for all the problems in society, and, let's face it, often just parrots the government line. So this podcast is offering something different: speaking truth to power, giving the marginalised a voice, of... more

  • Tired of the clickbait titles

I often enjoy Jone’s commentary and agree with his politics broadly but the tone and style of this podcast (just being outraged into a microphone) just doesn’t provide much insight and is at times unpleasantly vituperative. The show works a lot better when he is interviewing someone or leading a discussion but those episodes are few and far between. There’s room for podcasts with the one-voice format but not in my view when the tone is so unrelentingly vitriolic.

  • Outstanding

Owen Jones might look ‘young’ but he brings a level of old-fashioned journalistic professionalism and integrity (facts, evidence, substantiation, rationality) that is rarely seen in MSM now. He also brings increasingly rare qualities - a clear-eyed moral worldview, humanity and compassion. Remember when journalists used to understand the difference between right and wrong? He has outstanding interviewees whom he allows to speak and it is a testament to the respect in which he is held that the... more

  • Can understand why legacy media hates him

Owen brings facts and moral clarity. When the right are hysterical, Owen sounds like a raised eyebrow and a big belly sigh - “oh dear, let’s explain journalism again…”

  • Gorton + Denton observation

I notice how although the reform candidate MG ‘speaks’ the language of the things that matter to people yet Nigel and the wider gang of expat landlords who jet in/land in Gorton + Denton from UAE/Saudi millionaire space have no intention of observing the reality of precarious homes/work on the quality of life/infrastructural/service investment needed: witness them having a secretive ‘rally’ with supporters on an industrial estate where they can’t be held to democratic account. The people who cau... more

  • A thinker: explain this please

Question about pubs feudalism + reform’s constituency (it’s in the malformed pub culture)

When we hear about new legislation about leasehold reform in property hooray why can’t it be applied as a lens on the medieval way pub land/pub estates operate on landlords and tenants? It seems to me that through all the penalties and charges imposed by the estate and landholders invisibly and unaccountably on the people who want to work in a neighbourhood setting that it creates a vassal/feudal culture th... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Iran War Could Explode Far Beyond Hormuz
Q: Do you have a theory about why Donald Trump has restarted this war from an economic perspective? Because, frankly, objectively, it's been a catastrophe.
Sambit explains that the Trump administration faced conflicting domestic backers—MAGA supporters seeking reduced foreign wars versus security hawks aligned with Israel—making a clean exit or decisive victory difficult to achieve. He notes that earlier priors of a quick victory were likely incorrect and that economic considerations, including reserves and sanctions, constrained actions, while higher oil prices and renewed supply arrangements complicated any straightforward resolution.
Trump’s Iran Insanity Explained
Q: What does Iran's position look like given both internal dynamics and external pressures?
Iran faces a complex mix of internal hardliners and reform-minded actors, along with pressure from U.S. and regional powers. This combination makes a quick concession unlikely; Iran is inclined toward a long-term resistance, leveraging its strategic depth and diverse capabilities to deter coercion while seeking a durable security arrangement.
Trump’s Iran Insanity Explained
Q: What do you make of Donald Trump's return to war and the potential effects on the region?
Trump's actions appear to be driven by domestic political needs and a desire to project strength, but they risk destabilizing alliances and prolonging conflict. The unpredictability and lack of a coherent off-ramp make a negotiated settlement harder, potentially increasing regional volatility and pushing Iran toward a more hardline posture.
Heatwave RETURNING - And That Should TERRIFY You
Q: Why are heat waves becoming more extreme and frequent?
Because the average global temperature is rising, but the extremes are what dominate experience; climate change pushes weather toward more extreme events, including longer and hotter heat waves.
Heatwave RETURNING - And That Should TERRIFY You
Q: Do you think there's a significant chance that another heat wave will hit Western Europe?
Yes, there is a significant chance; heat waves are likely, though the exact temperatures may not match prior records. The key issue is the combination of high temperatures and high humidity that makes events dangerous.
