  • The only way to start your day

I love Mark Filippino’s work on the FT news briefing. There was a moment where they introduced horrible and loud ads at the beginning of the podcast, which was, thank god, promptly removed. Keep it up, i listen daily since 2020.

  • The best!

Crisp, intelligent, non-hyped stories backed by the Financial Times deep-resourced reporting. The show also what I can only describe as an uplifting personality, whatever is going on in the world of news.

  • Interesting and insightful podcast!

I started to listen to this when I didn’t really know much about finance etc. It became part of my morning routine and it’s one of the early achievements in my day . I love Marc’s hosting and sometimes would be upset if it’s not him. I hope this podcast continues to produce good contents. Hope the podcast can have more explanation when there’s certain terminology than it currently has. Keep going!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

European defence stocks face uncertainty
Q: Given all this, Aaron, what are we expecting from the KNDS IPO?
Valuation expectations have come down significantly; investors seem to be pricing in a more modest IPO than earlier plans, guided by recent defense-sector sentiment and specific market dynamics in Europe, though the IPO remains pivotal for European capital markets and Franco-German defense collaboration.
European defence stocks face uncertainty
Q: So let's start with KNDS. Tell me about the company and the IPO that they're planning.
KNDS is one of Europe's largest defense companies and a key supplier to the Ukraine war effort, with ownership historically split between the French government and a German family; the listing would reconfigure ownership to keep France and Germany as major shareholders, but the IPO valuation has cooled from around 20 billion euros to roughly 12-15 billion euros, reflecting softer investor sentiment.
Venezuela faces world’s largest debt restructuring
Q: James, ultimately, what could this restructuring mean for Venezuela as a country?
A successful restructuring will open the doors to foreign investors and enable long-term planning for growth after years of economic decline, while helping bring Venezuela back into the international financial framework and rule of law mechanisms that had been inaccessible, potentially stabilizing the economy over the long term.
Investors celebrate US-Iran deal
Q: Kate, given the inflationary environment, could we see central banks respond with rate hikes or policy shifts?
The expectation is that there won't be an immediate rate hike from the BOE or the Fed, but markets may see the easing bias removed from the Fed's communication, and there could be rate hikes later in the year depending on inflation trends.
Investors celebrate US-Iran deal
Q: So why are investors optimistic about this deal?
Because having input from both Iran and the United States lends credibility to a potential resolution and suggests that energy prices may ease as the Strait of Hormuz reopens and infrastructure is rebuilt.
