  • So disappointing

Such an interesting set of topics but they make it so hard to keep listening. Tett is just not good at interviewing or presenting and Wigglesworth for all his amazing FTA articles, just can’t weave a spoken narrative or ask good questions. They are trying to copy OddLots but they lack the chemistry and the interview skills. Very disappointing. You might as well have Siri read an article.

  • Could have been better

Oh dear, the presenters treat listeners like morons. Great subject spoiled by presenters trying to make it ‘accessible’. I gave up rather quickly.

  • Good recycling, bad for your liver

Good show, but retreads much of Alphaville’s more on-depth reportage. If you were to drink everyone Tett name drops her role at King’s Cambridge you would get sclerosis of the liver within the first few episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The deal that put the dollar at the centre of the world
Q: Did they try to thrash out their differences at all before Bretton Woods, or was this the first clear clash between Keynes and White?
There were years of meetings and negotiations where Keynes and White repeatedly confronted each other, with White pushing a more incremental, dollar-centered plan and Keynes advocating more radical, institutionally transformative ideas. Bretton Woods emerged from this ongoing tension, with White's framework ultimately taking precedence, though Keynes remained a powerful influence until the end.
The deal that put the dollar at the centre of the world
Q: Before we get to the White plan, can you tell us what were the key points of Keynes' plan?
Keynes proposed a central international clearing system with a new currency called Bancor, designed to ensure symmetrical adjustment of deficits and surpluses. His idea emphasized a global currency and a central instrument to help manage exchange-rate stability, aiming to prevent the kind of monetary breakdown that preceded World War II.
Why money is the biggest shared hallucination in human history
Q: What do Yap's stories teach us about the conventional wisdom that money evolves from barter and the role of credit?
Yap demonstrates that money often starts with credit and social trust, and that the tokens used to represent value are flexible, highlighting that money's core is the network of credits and debts rather than any particular physical token.
Why money is the biggest shared hallucination in human history
Q: So, Felix, can you tell us what the stone currency on Yap looked like and how it functioned in practice?
The Rai stones were not a portable currency; people kept them as property or as markers of wealth and would only move them in significant transactions, functioning as a social ledger rather than a physical medium of exchange.
How ancient Mesopotamians solved runaway debt
Q: What did daily life look like in Mesopotamia's economy, and how did debt fit into it?
Most people worked in agriculture or related trades; rents, taxes, and debt tied into the palace and temple estates. Debts arose when people borrowed to cover harvest shortfalls, with the system often using intermediaries who converted grain into silver for tax collection.
