  • A Staple Podcast

One could wish for a time when economics podcasts were occasional diversions rather than mandatory for understanding a rapidly changing economic world. But we do not live in such a time, so Soumaya Keynes’s The Economics Show has become required listening. It is penetrating, clear, and concise — as much pertinent content as some better known podcasts, but a lot less windy.

  • Prefer other host

Really cannot stand Soumaya; great guests but her snippy dismissive attitude towards them is annoying. Far prefer Martin Wolf. An epitome of this is her conversation with Carlos Cuerpo.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Can African countries mimic Asia’s economic success? With Joe Studwell
Q: Is the Asian development model directly translatable to Africa, given different circumstances?
The core recipe—emphasize agriculture, build manufacturing capacity, and manage finance—can be adapted to Africa, but it must fit each country's context, demographic realities, governance capacity, and industrial capabilities, rather than a simple copy-paste.
Can African countries mimic Asia’s economic success? With Joe Studwell
Q: What's the thesis for why Asia worked, and how did those miracles happen?
Asia succeeded by adopting a policy mix that encouraged manufacturing, supported agriculture, and manipulated financial systems to favor growth sectors, along with capital controls to keep money at home and a focus on urbanization and consumption patterns that powered development.
Should economics have fewer taboos? With Alvin Roth
Q: What are the ethical considerations around conducting experiments on economists or patients, and how should consent be handled?
Ethics require transparency, informed consent when feasible, and clear communication about what is being tested; even if experiments can improve understanding, participants should not be misled about the purpose or potential outcomes.
Should economics have fewer taboos? With Alvin Roth
Q: What do you think about surrogacy across borders, and how do laws affect outcomes?
Regulation often lags behind practice, and bans create unintended pathways; a regulated market with robust protections could reduce suffering and protect vulnerable parties, though it requires careful legal frameworks across jurisdictions.
Should economics have fewer taboos? With Alvin Roth
Q: What is the best case against allowing a paid kidney market, and what safeguards would be needed?
The main concerns are inequitable access and coercion; a possible design would involve government payment and careful attention to equity and consent, ensuring access regardless of income.
