  • A Staple Podcast

One could wish for a time when economics podcasts were occasional diversions rather than mandatory for understanding a rapidly changing economic world. But we do not live in such a time, so Soumaya Keynes’s The Economics Show has become required listening. It is penetrating, clear, and concise — as much pertinent content as some better known podcasts, but a lot less windy.

  • Prefer other host

Really cannot stand Soumaya; great guests but her snippy dismissive attitude towards them is annoying. Far prefer Martin Wolf. An epitome of this is her conversation with Carlos Cuerpo.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The global economy is Iran’s hostage. Can it be released? With Edward Fishman
Q: What would be the likely outcomes if the US or its allies escalated or sought regime change in Iran, beyond sanctions?
Escalation could lead to regime change but with huge risks, including destabilization, higher regional conflict, and long-term strategic shifts that could either weaken or strengthen US standing depending on the resolution, alliance dynamics, and the ability to secure sea lanes and energy flows.
The global economy is Iran’s hostage. Can it be released? With Edward Fishman
Q: Are there any other economic weapons one could deploy besides weaponizing Hormuz, or is substitution not feasible?
There are limited substitutes for the Strait of Hormuz; energy markets would still be disrupted, and while some rerouting exists (e.g., pipelines), overall there is no easy replacement that would prevent significant price shocks or supply risks.
Economic warfare: lessons from history, with Mark Harrison
Q: What guidance would you give to policymakers today who are considering economic weapons against a state like Russia or Iran?
Beware of assuming there are only two options—compliance or suffering—because opponents can adapt by diversifying trade routes and partnering with third countries. Sanctions should be part of a broader strategy that includes credible threat of sustained pressure, alliance coordination, and readiness for longer timeframes to avoid triggering quicker adaptive responses by the adversary.
Economic warfare: lessons from history, with Mark Harrison
Q: What were the factors beyond blockades that contributed to outcomes in World War I and how do those lessons apply today?
Blockades were one of several pressures on the German economy and food supply; mobilization and internal inefficiencies, such as dependence on imported nitrates and food, mattered as much as external restrictions. The lesson for today is that economic coercion works best when reinforced by strategic military and political pressure, and when adversaries can substitute away from restricted goods, reducing the effectiveness of unilateral sanctions.
Economic warfare: lessons from history, with Mark Harrison
Q: Can you explain the different methods of economic weaponry and how their impact has evolved over time?
Historically, early forms of economic warfare focused on denying revenue by cutting exports to starve financing for war, but over time the emphasis shifted toward cutting off supplies essential for weapon production, such as nitrates and microchips, which can be more penetrating than simply restricting trade. The effect is often gradual and contingent, with adversaries adapting through substitutions and rerouting trade via third countries, making it clear that economic tools require long horizons and careful targeting to avoid unintended consequences.
