  • Slamming the nurse practitioner profession

Shame on you Holly Wayment for discrediting a nurse practitioner’s clinical judgement in diagnosing and treating our patients! UT Health is comprised of numerous physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other advance practice providers who strive to provide the best care possible for our patients and families. It is disheartening to hear, on a public podcast, that you would slander anyone on your own team.

  • A well intentioned podcast

Audio for the interview is fine, once you get past the intro which still needs adjusting.

My issue as a pediatrician is with the interviews themselves. Great guests with knowledge and expertise are limited somewhat by Ms. Wayment’s lack of medical knowledge. Her questions would be fine for the lay person who has a low base, but for practitioners/providers, it would be much better to have a professional doing the interview or at least making sure Holly’s questions are some they think appropriate... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Andes Hantavirus, Murine Typhus & Salmonella: Pediatric Infectious Disease Update
Q: Deena, how concerning is the American passenger who tested positive but is asymptomatic now, and could it present weeks or months later?
The incubation period is typically about two weeks, but cases have been reported up to six weeks after exposure, so exposed individuals require monitoring for that window; overall, sustained transmission is unlikely, and the clinical concern centers on close contact and rapid progression in rare cases.
Spurs Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Leah Brown on Concussions & Early TBI Identification
Q: What final guidance would you give to pediatricians and parents about keeping kids safe while still encouraging sports participation?
Protect the brain by prioritizing safety, recognizing symptoms early, following a structured, gradual return-to-learn and return-to-play plan, and fostering a culture where athletes feel comfortable reporting symptoms without pressure to return too soon.
Spurs Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Leah Brown on Concussions & Early TBI Identification
Q: So when a concussion is suspected during a game, what are the first steps from a medical standpoint?
Early recognition and initial assessment are critical, with a focus on identifying symptoms such as cognitive fog, headaches, sensitivity to light or noise, and recognizing that even non-sport injuries can cause concussion. Avoid returning to play while symptomatic and use established protocols to guide diagnosis and management.
Artemis II: From the Moon to Medicine — NASA’s AVATAR Experiment and Its Impact on Pediatric Care | Dr. Lisa Carnell
Q: How soon could pediatric care benefit from this technology?
The framework is being built now with cross-agency collaboration; eventual integration into clinical decision-making could begin with disease-specific chip models and patient-derived cells, accelerating personalized therapy choices.
Artemis II: From the Moon to Medicine — NASA’s AVATAR Experiment and Its Impact on Pediatric Care | Dr. Lisa Carnell
Q: Will this help reduce harmful effects from necessary medical radiation and improve protection of healthy cells?
It will, because the organ chip models allow comparison of how healthy versus diseased tissues respond to radiation and therapies, enabling optimization of protective strategies and treatment plans before real patients receive them.
