  • Good content, poor hosting

As an AAP member I would love to listen to this podcast, but the hosts are incredibly annoying. They seem fake and silly.

  • Equity is More Than Talk: Move 2024 Meeting

I applaud the AAP for having a new Equity Leadership position and their commitment to further examining and tackling the racial inequities in medicine. However, I have two concerns. First “eliminating race-based medicine” sounds too similar to the Supreme Court announcement that “race blind” is the goal. That does not address the needs of minoritized families and communities. Second, the AAP cannot claim to center equity when they are holding their 2024 meeting in Florida. Both the NAACP and HRC... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Principles for Health Information Technology to Support and Protect Adolescent Confidentiality, Consensus Recommendations for Antiracist Child Health Research – Ep. 291
Q: What immediate steps can clinicians take today to protect adolescents' confidential information within their current EHR?
Know the exact capabilities of their EHR, verify what information is shared with proxies or parents, and advocate for policy changes and vendor updates while educating patients and families about confidentiality limits.
Principles for Health Information Technology to Support and Protect Adolescent Confidentiality, Consensus Recommendations for Antiracist Child Health Research – Ep. 291
Q: For general pediatricians listening, how do they begin to build an electronic health record system that protects confidentiality for adolescents?
Engage stakeholders early, include clinical staff and IT, understand what can be segmented in the EHR, and actively seek adolescent and family input to design portals and notes that balance confidentiality with care quality.
Pediatrics Research Roundup, Approaching Healthy Mental and Emotional Development – Ep. 290
Q: Why should we move away from a purely problems-based approach to patient care in mental health?
The approach should be broader because mental health concerns in children are often multifactorial and not tied to a single diagnosis; a step back allows for relationship-building, ongoing assessment over multiple visits, and targeted problem-solving without rushing to diagnosis or unnecessary treatments.
Pathways to Pediatrics with Dr. Diana Montoya-Williams – Ep. 285
Q: What advice would you give foreign medical students or researchers wanting to work in the United States?
Stay informed about rapidly changing policies, leverage networks to understand how policies evolve, and maintain virtual connections and mentorship opportunities to navigate barriers.
Pathways to Pediatrics with Dr. Diana Montoya-Williams – Ep. 285
Q: What is your favorite thing about being a pediatrician?
Seeing families when their babies achieve milestones and witnessing the joy of parenting moments, even in the NICU, brings hope and motivation to continue in the field.
