  • Good content, poor hosting

As an AAP member I would love to listen to this podcast, but the hosts are incredibly annoying. They seem fake and silly.

  • Equity is More Than Talk: Move 2024 Meeting

I applaud the AAP for having a new Equity Leadership position and their commitment to further examining and tackling the racial inequities in medicine. However, I have two concerns. First “eliminating race-based medicine” sounds too similar to the Supreme Court announcement that “race blind” is the goal. That does not address the needs of minoritized families and communities. Second, the AAP cannot claim to center equity when they are holding their 2024 meeting in Florida. Both the NAACP and HRC... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Gender Pay Equity, Adolescent Knowledge and STI Testing – Ep. 297
Q: How much less are women physicians earning compared to men in pediatrics?
Across pediatrics, women earn roughly 76% to 87% of male physicians' earnings, with lower starting salaries and a widening gap over time due to factors like caregiving and fewer leadership opportunities.
Prevention of Drowning, Pediatric Workforce Shortages – Ep. 293
Q: Should organizations like the AAP push harder on salary advocacy and Medicaid reform?
Yes, the AAP has been an effective advocate with a Washington presence, but meaningful reform requires addressing Medicaid state-by-state disparities and broader reimbursement issues to ensure sustainable careers in pediatrics.
Prevention of Drowning, Pediatric Workforce Shortages – Ep. 293
Q: What are the key takeaways for pediatricians who want to advocate for a more diverse and robust workforce?
Mentoring is crucial, diversification must be intentional, and sharing a consistent, compelling message about the positive impact of pediatrics helps recruit students; addressing debt and compensation concerns is also essential to retain and attract talent.
Prevention of Drowning, Pediatric Workforce Shortages – Ep. 293
Q: When the initiative started, it was envisioned as a five-year effort. What pushed it forward to become ongoing?
The initiative faced changes in the federal landscape, cutbacks to Medicaid, and policy shifts that made reform seem more complex; recognizing these challenges, leaders decided to make the effort ongoing to create lasting impact beyond a fixed timeframe.
Preparation for Pediatric Emergencies in the Office, A Family-Focused Approach to Weight Management – Ep. 292
Q: What are the essential pieces of equipment or medications offices should have on hand to manage emergencies?
A prioritized list includes basic equipment and medications to stabilize patients, with some items like naloxone and AEDs added, and some older items removed from previous lists to reflect current practice and training.
