Your recent conversation with Yuval Harari was so interesting I listened to it twice and shared it. Please have him on more! The dynamic between you two is perfectly balanced.

  • Confused why this was recommended

I don’t know what’s wrong with the algorithm. I listen to intelligent, insightful podcasts. This was idiotic.

  • Ezra is Buddhist, apparently

Ezra Klein has a mixture of good, bad, interesting, and thoughtless hot takes on politics. I appreciate that he at least takes a posture of kindness and often comes across as humble. But boy do I dislike the repeated efforts to make Buddhism palatable to his audience. Buddhism’s escapist mindset and self-focused practices offer nothing valuable to our present challenges, and I lose respect for Ezra each time he presents it as uniquely helpful

Good on politics. Terrible on religion.

  • Housing in California

I listened with interest to the debate about how hard it is to build housing in CA. I have lived in Santa Monica, CA for over 36 years and I have never seen so much housing development. Mixed use projects are popping up all over the place. Maybe Santa Monica is an anomaly.

On another note….. if it is so inexpensive to build in Texas and that is where people want to live, then they should, all means, move there. There are too many people in CA anyway. Growth for growth’s sake never made sense... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is It Time to Break the Two-Party System?
Q: Is proportional representation likely to be accepted in the U.S. political system, given incumbents' incentives?
Passage would require significant political courage, including expanding the House to blunt seat losses and possibly passing a federal law to redefine districting, but broad dissatisfaction with the status quo, plus a clear outline of the alternative, could create momentum for reform.
Is It Time to Break the Two-Party System?
Q: What does this do about gerrymandering, and what is the proportional representation answer to that question?
The argument is that gerrymandering thrives under a system that concentrates power in single-member districts, and proportional representation would replace that with multi-member districts where seats are distributed according to vote shares, reducing the ability to disenfranchise minority voices and making outcomes more reflective of overall support.
GLP-1s and the ‘Wild West’ of Wellness
Q: Why are GLP-1 drugs so widely used beyond their original diabetic purpose, and what does that imply for society?
Belluz explains that the drugs were observed to cause weight loss in diabetics, but their benefits span beyond weight—reducing inflammation and potentially protecting organs like the liver and kidneys—leading to rapid adoption, telemedicine-driven access, and bold experimentation in both adults and children with limited long-term data.
This Is Why I Find Pema Chödrön So Essential
Q: And you write there that the central question is not how we avoid uncertainty and fear, but how we relate to discomfort. Why?
Discomfort is the ongoing thread of human experience in this age, and Buddhism offers a path not to erase it but to accompany it with warmth and awareness, so that the body and nervous system learn to stay present with what arises rather than trying to annihilate it.
Reckoning With Israel’s ‘One-State Reality’
Q: What do you hear in Netanyahu's public stance that helps shift our understanding from failed peace processes to a more permanent project?”
Marc argues that Netanyahu has not merely blocked a two-state solution but reflected a broader shift within Israeli society toward accepting a long-term, integrated governance of the territory, where the path to a peaceful two-state outcome seems increasingly unlikely if not abandoned, and where the question of rights and statehood for Palestinians is reframed within a predominantly security-first framework.
