  • Smart and Self-Congratulatory

I try to listen to all sides of important issues. When I want to hear the liberal side, I come here. I find Ezra to be well versed and brave in confronting conflict unflinchingly. I appreciate that he challenges his guests, even in the face of "party consensus". That said, there remains a smug lack of self-awareness of the biases baked into the insular pie. I feel like Ezra isn't interested just in "preaching to the choir", but hasn't spent enough time in the congregation to stand as a proxy for... more

  • Done with this

His interpretation of the middle east is one of a comfortable liberal in the US sipping tea with other intellectuals. He has no actual understanding of what people live through and the threats around them. I wish I lived in his world, but, unfortunately, I live in this one with jihadists.

  • 1 state schadenfreude

If you enjoy listening to a pompous elitist with an annoying vocal fry (slowly) struggle with the reality that Israel is isn't a democracy let alone a liberal one, then this is the podcast for you. Ezra has come a long way...but I estimate he's probably looking at another 10 or 15 years for his catharsis to be complete!

  • Ezra's everything wrong with Progressive Neoliberalism

Ezra has always presented as one of the smartest, most thoughtful pundits in the room, but it's an act like so many others. His recent conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates finally exposed him for the unprincipled, inconsistent, and feckless progressivism he's paid to espouse by the NYTimes. He's a measured progressive: inoffensive to billionaires and executives, agreeable to moderates who THINK they're progressive, and nonthreatening to conservative and fascists to where they don't even have to pa... more

  • Tuesday April 14 episode!

Amazing guests on Tuesday April 14th who laid out the persona of the state of Israel in a totally factual manner, with such moral clarity, and without a hint of prejudice. I haven’t always liked Ezra’s equivocation on this matter which seems increasingly forced (for what it’s worth, I actually think it’s him playing devil’s advocate and not how he really feels), but he’s had some great guests - first Coates and now these.

Reckoning With Israel’s ‘One-State Reality’
Q: What do you hear in Netanyahu's public stance that helps shift our understanding from failed peace processes to a more permanent project?”
Marc argues that Netanyahu has not merely blocked a two-state solution but reflected a broader shift within Israeli society toward accepting a long-term, integrated governance of the territory, where the path to a peaceful two-state outcome seems increasingly unlikely if not abandoned, and where the question of rights and statehood for Palestinians is reframed within a predominantly security-first framework.
Reckoning With Israel’s ‘One-State Reality’
Q: So I want to start, Marc, before October 7th. You and Shibley and a few authors published a book of essays and big Foreign Affairs article called Israel's One State Reality. And the argument you make is that the two-state solution is a fantasy, it's dead. That there is a reality that we are failing to apprehend in Israel, which is that there is one sovereign from the river to the sea. What convinced you to make that argument? How did this work in your view, say, in the West Bank?
Marc Lynch explains that, historically, there was a window when the West Bank and Gaza showed signs of a de facto two-state order, but over time the reality of continuous settlements, security walls, and political fragmentation created a durable, single-sovereign regime in practice. The October 7th shock accelerated this trajectory, making the single-state reality undeniable, with Palestinians experiencing sharply unequal rights under a complex, layered legal regime.
Michael Pollan’s Journey to the Borderlands of Consciousness
Q: What is idealism?
Pollan explains idealism as the view that consciousness may be a universal field rather than generated purely by matter, contrasting it with materialist perspectives and discussing panpsychism as a possible framework.
Michael Pollan’s Journey to the Borderlands of Consciousness
Q: Do you think you're causing plants pain by pruning them?
Pollan discusses plant sentience, the debate around plant pain, the idea that plants have basic forms of awareness, and the caution needed in translating these findings to moral judgments.
I Asked a Former Trump Official to Justify This War
Q: Tell me about The Globalist Delusion and its argument.
The argument contrasts a traditional globalist approach—emphasizing global problems and solutions—with a state-first approach that prioritizes national interests and bilateral solutions, suggesting the Trump administration favored the latter as a more effective framework for achieving outcomes.
