Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Digestive Health: Food Has Evolved — Our Gut Hasn’t
Q: Are vitamins and minerals a key part of digestion, and should most people supplement?
Balanced diets typically suffice for minerals and vitamins, with supplements only necessary for specific deficiencies or conditions; emphasis is on a well-rounded diet rather than relying on pills.
Digestive Health: Food Has Evolved — Our Gut Hasn’t
Q: What role does fiber play in digestion, and can you overdo it?
Fiber is essential and should be balanced with other nutrients; excessive or extreme fiber intake can be counterproductive, and fiber should come from a variety of natural sources rather than fiber-maxxing alone.
Digestive Health: Food Has Evolved — Our Gut Hasn’t
Q: How have diets changed over time and what effect does fast food have on our health?
Historically, diets started from earth-based, minimally processed foods; industrialization brought processed foods and long shelf-life items, which now shape our modern eating patterns and microbiome, influencing digestion.
Rec Leagues: The Case for Playing Sports as an Adult
Q: What are some of your top recommendations for adults who want to join a recreational league?
Start with a sport you enjoy, build up gradually, incorporate some targeted strengthening and stretching, and plan meals and hydration around workouts to support performance and recovery.
Pelvic Floor: What “Strong” Really Means
Q: What does it mean for the pelvic floor to tense up and relax, and how do you balance strengthening with flexibility?
There are two dysfunctions to watch for: a very weak and a very tight pelvic floor; strengthening exercises like Kegels are helpful for weakness, while addressing pain and tightness may require therapy and a tailored plan to avoid overstressing the area.
