Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cancer Screening: Can One Blood Test Really Detect 50+ Cancers?
Q: What are the major concerns with false positives in these tests?
False positives can lead to unnecessary anxiety and longer diagnostic workups; the PATHFINDER study showed a high rate of false positives, underscoring the need for careful interpretation and follow-up.
Cancer Screening: Can One Blood Test Really Detect 50+ Cancers?
Q: Can a blood test replace colonoscopy for colon cancer screening?
For colon cancer, FDA-approved Shield is not superior to stool-based tests or colonoscopy; it can be a supplementary option to engage untested patients, but colonoscopy remains the gold standard.
Cancer Screening: Can One Blood Test Really Detect 50+ Cancers?
Q: Are these tests FDA approved and how does that affect their use in practice?
Most multi-cancer tests are not FDA approved yet, which affects insurance coverage and clinical adoption; FDA approval is a key factor in clearance and standard of care.
Cancer Screening: Can One Blood Test Really Detect 50+ Cancers?
Q: How do multi-cancer detection tests work, in practical terms?
They analyze DNA fragments shed by cancer into the bloodstream to predict the cancer signal of origin, but with a positive result often requiring further diagnostic workup to confirm and locate the cancer.
Cortisol: Is the ‘Stress Hormone’ Stressing You Out?
Q: What is cortisol and what role does it play in how our body functions?
Cortisol is best understood as an energy mobilization hormone rather than simply the stress hormone; it rises in the morning to help wake us up and provides energy through various body systems, while its levels should naturally decline toward evening to support sleep.
