  • Too many times politics play a role

Dr David Katz’s mention of Harvard and losing funding was blandly political and had nothing to do with the dietary guidelines. It’s laughable to claim this administration is overtly threatening. Having worked under Biden and Obama and its co-opting of the federal law enforcement agencies is again laughable. You as well as your guests have an agenda as everyone has an agenda. The propaganda and pushing of your own ‘“intel” is admirable but as usual not objective. All of us have biases but it whet... more

  • Really good and I hope nuanced

I was so excited to find this podcast at first, but the episode with Drew veered into disappointing. I’ve been a vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore at different times in my life. I don’t want to hear reductive thinking about nutrition or ethics that pretends any option is better. Hoping for a more nuanced perspective (for example, can someone afford meat from a local small farm vs vegan alternatives with many ingredients shipped all over the world? Or look up the horrors of sugar plantations that r... more

  • Wow! Totally Biased

So disappointed that I had to listen to anti-Trump “scientists” purporting that SNAP limitations will cause more disease. Like seriously???? SNAP is a food subsidy not a junk food freebie.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Diet That Lowers Cholesterol Like a Statin | Dr Andrea Glenn
Q: How do we interpret this in the context of public health guidelines and real-world eating?
We should look at the totality of evidence—cohort studies, trials, and population-level data—before changing guidelines. The Portfolio Diet offers a potentially powerful approach when foods are consumed as part of a pattern, but adherence and real-world implementation matter a lot. It's not just about macronutrients but about the quality and sources of those nutrients, and how the whole dietary pattern displaces less healthy options.
The Diet That Lowers Cholesterol Like a Statin | Dr Andrea Glenn
Q: What do the data say about LDL reductions and other outcomes when following this diet?
Early metabolic studies showed LDL reductions around 28-30% with adherence and targeted intake; later trials comparing to statins showed similar reductions. In real-world diet advice trials, the reductions were smaller (around 14-15%), largely because participants hit only about half of the targets. Across cohorts, higher adherence was linked with lower cardiovascular risk and diabetes risk, with consistent signals for LDL and inflammatory markers.
The Diet That Lowers Cholesterol Like a Statin | Dr Andrea Glenn
Q: Can you walk us through what the Portfolio Diet is and its origins?
The Portfolio Diet was developed by David Jenkins and colleagues to stack multiple LDL-lowering foods—plant protein (especially soy and legumes), nuts, viscous fiber (oats, barley, psyllium, etc.), plant sterols, and later mono-unsaturated fats from plant oils—into a dietary pattern that could produce substantial LDL reductions, potentially comparable to a statin at certain doses. The idea is to replace or displace high-saturated-fat choices with these targeted foods, creating a real-world, cook-and-eat strategy rather than a rigid prescription.
The Peptides Quietly Accelerating Aging | Dr Valter Longo
Q: You've described a lot of evidence around the risks of growth hormone secretagogues. If someone asks whether IGF-1 elevation from exercise is risky, what would you say?
Exercise can increase IGF-1 and have benefits, but the goal is to balance IGF-1 with protective factors like GLP-1, FGF21, and a moderate IGF-1 level; pharmaceutical secretagogues that constantly elevate IGF-1 carry long-term risks and should not be relied upon.
The Peptide Lie: What a Drug Developer Reveals About the Compounds Everyone Is Injecting | Dr Leigh Baxt
Q: Why are peptides outside FDA-approved pathways considered risky?
Because they often lack comprehensive preclinical and clinical data, may not have well-defined targets or mechanisms, and lack rigorous pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) validation, making it hard to quantify risks and benefits.
