  • Too many times politics play a role

Dr David Katz’s mention of Harvard and losing funding was blandly political and had nothing to do with the dietary guidelines. It’s laughable to claim this administration is overtly threatening. Having worked under Biden and Obama and its co-opting of the federal law enforcement agencies is again laughable. You as well as your guests have an agenda as everyone has an agenda. The propaganda and pushing of your own ‘“intel” is admirable but as usual not objective. All of us have biases but it whet... more

  • Really good and I hope nuanced

I was so excited to find this podcast at first, but the episode with Drew veered into disappointing. I’ve been a vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore at different times in my life. I don’t want to hear reductive thinking about nutrition or ethics that pretends any option is better. Hoping for a more nuanced perspective (for example, can someone afford meat from a local small farm vs vegan alternatives with many ingredients shipped all over the world? Or look up the horrors of sugar plantations that r... more

  • Wow! Totally Biased

So disappointed that I had to listen to anti-Trump “scientists” purporting that SNAP limitations will cause more disease. Like seriously???? SNAP is a food subsidy not a junk food freebie.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Peptide Lie: What a Drug Developer Reveals About the Compounds Everyone Is Injecting | Dr Leigh Baxt
Q: Why are peptides outside FDA-approved pathways considered risky?
Because they often lack comprehensive preclinical and clinical data, may not have well-defined targets or mechanisms, and lack rigorous pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) validation, making it hard to quantify risks and benefits.
The Peptide Lie: What a Drug Developer Reveals About the Compounds Everyone Is Injecting | Dr Leigh Baxt
Q: What does the drug development process look like from concept to approval?
The process typically spans many years and involves moving from idea to intellectual property, creating animal proof of concept data, then conducting phased human clinical trials (IND enabling studies, followed by Phase 1-3), with FDA approval contingent on demonstrated safety and efficacy for a defined population.
New microbiome science | Dr Tim Spector
Q: What does this mean for probiotics and fermented foods?
The ranking system could shift focus from single-strain probiotics to strategies that foster the top 50 beneficial microbes identified in the study, possibly via prebiotics and dietary patterns that promote a broader, plant-rich microbiome. Fermented foods may play a complementary role by modulating immune signals and supporting a diverse microbial ecosystem.
New microbiome science | Dr Tim Spector
Q: How would this microbiome rating add value to a doctor assessing someone's risk beyond traditional biomarkers like cholesterol or HbA1c?
At present, the rating serves as a surrogate for longer-term outcomes since long-term endpoints are not yet available. It complements traditional tests by reflecting gut-derived inflammation and metabolic signaling, potentially offering a way to personalize diet and monitor holistically how the body is reacting beyond a single blood measurement.
New microbiome science | Dr Tim Spector
Q: I've heard some describe this research as groundbreaking. What can you tell us about this study and its significance?
The study is a large method paper that reframes gut health assessment by moving away from simple diversity metrics to a curated ratio of good to bad gut bugs. It spans tens of thousands of participants and cross-validates the ranking across multiple populations, strengthening the case that this microbiome rating captures meaningful health signals and helps guide dietary interventions.
