  • Not enough diet info

I’ve had kidney disease for over 10 years. No doctor ever told me that different foods could affect my kidneys differently or to avoid anything. I recently found out that my potassium and phosphorus are OK but there needs to be more information out about the things you can do to help yourself.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Navigating Kidney Cancer Treatment Side Effects: What to Expect
Q: What should patients do if side effects feel overwhelming or if they consider stopping treatment?
Patients should pause and call their care team rather than stopping on their own; many side effects are manageable with guidance, and ongoing communication helps tailor dosing and supportive care to maintain cancer control.
Navigating Kidney Cancer Treatment Side Effects: What to Expect
Q: What are common side effects from these therapies and how are they managed?
Immunotherapies often cause immune-related effects like diarrhea, skin rashes, and thyroid issues; targeted therapies can cause hypertension and other organ-specific effects. Management includes steroids for severe immune effects, topical or systemic for milder issues, dose adjustments, and supportive care to keep patients on treatment.
Navigating Kidney Cancer Treatment Side Effects: What to Expect
Q: How is kidney cancer treatment evolving today and what are the main therapy types?
Immunotherapy works by stimulating the immune system to fight cancer, while targeted therapies focus on specific molecules and pathways; both have broadened the options and extended survival, with many patients receiving combinations that balance efficacy and toxicity.
Speaking Up About Phosphorus on Dialysis
Q: What are the main approaches to controlling phosphorus, and how do binders and blockers fit in?
A four-pronged approach: dietary input reduction, phosphorus binders that trap phosphorus in the gut, blockers that reduce GI absorption, and good dialysis; binders vary in effectiveness and patient tolerance, blockers provide an additional mechanism when binders and diet aren't enough.
Speaking Up About Phosphorus on Dialysis
Q: Annabel, why is high phosphorus such a common issue for people on dialysis?
Because CKD disrupts the kidneys' ability to excrete phosphorus, particularly in stages 4 and 5, leading to elevated levels that contribute to bone and heart problems; management requires a mix of diet, medications, and dialysis adjustments.
