One July night in 1995, Deputy Sheriff William G. Hardy was shot behind the Crown Sterling Suites hotel in Birmingham, Alabama. At the same time as the murder, at least ten people saw Toforest Johnson four miles away, at a popular nightclub called Tee's Place. But detectives zeroed in on him as a main suspect in Deputy Hardy’s murder anyway, ultimately resulting in Toforest being tried, convicted,... more

Very well told, well researched story of a stunning miscarriage of justice for a man wrongly convicted and sent to death row. As discussed in the podcast, how is Taforest still on death row when both the past and present prosecutors are asking for another trial? I hope his story has a happy ending soon.
Writing a review to hopefully help promote this podcast and its thorough documentation of the injustice done to Toforest.
It isn’t the amount of melanin that seems to be the primary problem it’s corruption coverups and lying liars who lie
Out of ALL the podcasts I have listened to none has ever made me more upset than this one! I found myself “arguing” with people who clearly can’t hear me! Lol It was shocking to hear all the blatant injustices that happened here. How do these people live with themselves, do they not have a conscience? I don’t usually write reviews for podcasts, but as an avid long series true crime listener, I hadn’t heard about this podcast until two years after it was dropped. It’s one of the best I’ve listened to. Excellent reporting and storytelling.

This series investigates a long-running death-row case, blending rigorous journalism with narrative storytelling to reveal gaps and potential misconduct in a high-profile murder prosecution. Across episodes, listeners encounter questions about eyewitness reliability, prosecutorial ethics, and the pressure of the death penalty, all framed through interviews with investigators, prosecutors, jurors, and the so-called earwitness. A notable strength is the access to key players and the willingness to challenge official accounts, making it especially compelling for those interested in criminal justice reform and in-depth case studies rather than sensational amped-up true crime.
A standout feature is the sustained focus on procedural flaws and sy... more
