  • Extremely applicable advice on building a business with online coaching

I am currently building an online coaching business, just followed one of the podcast, entitled three steps to starting a business and I’m getting a lot out of this podcast. Matt and his brother offer extremely practical advice and both come from a successful background having learned many lessons the hard way it seems. I really appreciate what they’re doing and hope to work with him in the future.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Reliability in Coaching: The Skill That Keeps Clients
Q: How did reliability manifest in a gym setting compared to online coaching?
In-person reliability requires constant presence and energy for each hour-long session, while online coaching benefits from the ability to present well on video, but still hinges on consistent availability, timely feedback, and strong client relationships.
Voluntary Hardship in Training: Why Comfort is Killing Your Gains
Q: How should someone evaluate if their program is hard enough?
Track progress over multiple weeks to see if you're getting stronger or performing more reps with the same weight; if tonnage or workload increases consistently, the program is challenging enough. If progress stalls, adjust one variable at a time.
Home Gym Essentials for Beginners: You Don't Need Fancy Equipment to Get Strong
Q: What would you recommend for someone on a very small budget?
Start with affordable racks from Walmart/Amazon, ensure safeties and a sturdy bench, and then incrementally add equipment like adjustable dumbbells or a cable setup as space and budget allow.
Home Gym Essentials for Beginners: You Don't Need Fancy Equipment to Get Strong
Q: I hear bad things about Titan Fitness. What's your experience here?
Overall mixed, but my experience with Titan has been generally positive; they often have stock issues or shipping delays, but you can find good value and service if you're selective and mindful of budget.
Nutrition for Longevity: Stop Eating Like Your Health Doesn't Matter
Q: What are three habits everyone should be doing for long-term health, and three to avoid?
Three essential habits are protein intake at roughly one gram per pound of body weight, prioritizing quality sleep, and consistent strength training. Three things to avoid are extreme, unsustainable caloric restriction or drastic dieting swings, pushing for overly harsh changes that aren't maintainable for years, and letting motivation wane after initial spikes without a plan.
