  • My new daily

Great podcast for developing case based knowledge as a new graduate farm vet. I would highly recommend to any beef/dairy farmer too. Although the show is based on the US farming systems, I find 99% very applicable here in the UK.

Concise, clear and interesting. Really glad I stumbled across this. It is significantly helping to broaden my clinical knowledge base. Ties in nicely to other agricultural sciences too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Written Grazing Plans and Profitability: What Drives Adoption on Cow-Calf Operations?
Q: How did experience in cattle production relate to adoption of written plans?
Producers with less than 20 years in cattle were less likely to adopt, while those with under 10 years showed higher likelihood of adopting than some longer-tenured groups, suggesting younger producers may be more open to formal planning.
Written Grazing Plans and Profitability: What Drives Adoption on Cow-Calf Operations?
Q: What were the main factors associated with adopting grazing plans according to the survey?
Herd size, operation size, the use of intensive grazing, and prior planning habits were all linked to adoption, with larger operations sometimes more likely to adopt if they also use intensive grazing and keep the plan written.
After the Abstract: Bovine Leukemia Virus and Beef Cow Performance
Q: How should practitioners interpret BLV testing in healthy herds?
Be cautious about drawing conclusions from ELISA alone; proviral load may offer slightly more information but is not definitive for production outcomes in beef herds; consider herd context and avoid over-testing.
After the Abstract: Bovine Leukemia Virus and Beef Cow Performance
Q: What specifically drew you to this article?
We were interested in whether BLV status is a reliable indicator of production outcomes in beef cattle, especially given contrasting findings from K-State and the new longitudinal study.
After the Abstract: Pregnancy Loss in Crossbred Beef Cows
Q: What are the main takeaways for practitioners designing AI programs and herd management?
Prioritize cows showing estrous behavior for AI, monitor and manage body condition and nutrition during early gestation, and consider seasonal factors in breeding plans to improve chances of maintaining pregnancy.
