  • Great Relavent Content

I really appreciate the variety of topics in each podcast. It really packs in the information in useable chunks. I also value the multiple perspectives as each perspective can be the best decision based on the context of your operation. Great job crew. I appreciate this!

  • One of the best

Its straight down the line enjoyable listening, factual stuff. Listen weekly and will regularly relisten to podcasts. The guys have a good dynamic between them. The quality of content is high and guys do speak clearly, seems a strange thing to say but on some other cattle podcasts I sometimes struggle to clearly hear whats been said which you would think is rule number 1 on podcasts. These guys are clear.

    Thanks guys keep its up!

  • Finally!!

Finally a cowboys podcast I can listen too. Informative and gets to the point. I hate those other podcasts where they just need out. This one speaks to the family trying to improve their own operation.

  • Needs audio production improvement

Great content and knowledgeable hosts/guests but frequently seems like they are whispering. When I normally listen at 50% volume I need to turn it up to 90% to hear them. Will update review when I notice this improvement.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Research Update: Larrison Hicks, Line Breeding, Nutritional Listener Questions
Q: How do aflatoxins in feed affect cattle, and how should producers manage risk?
Aflatoxins are chronic liver toxins that can cause long-term liver damage with widespread production impacts; management includes testing feeds, recognizing hotspot contamination, considering dilution strategies with reliable toxin data, and using binders where legally permissible, while understanding that full prevention can be costly and complex.
Research Update: Larrison Hicks, Line Breeding, Nutritional Listener Questions
Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of line breeding and using closely related individuals?
Line breeding can elevate desirable traits but increases the risk of genetic defects and reduced fertility; history shows mixed results, with strict management and low inbreeding coefficients being crucial, and often better outcomes come from unrelated superior parents to maintain heterosis.
Research Update: Larrison Hicks, Line Breeding, Nutritional Listener Questions
Q: What did you actually do in this study, Larrison?
We evaluated a direct-fed microbial, milk feeding method, growth performance, health outcomes, and GI permeability in nine weeks of calves, with interim results showing no effect on growth or health in the first three weeks, while continuing to monitor final outcomes.
Cattlemen’s Day Questions
Q: When applying to veterinary school, what do you look for in essays?
Look for evidence of critical thinking and understanding of how veterinarians create value in society, write for an audience of experienced veterinarians, and demonstrate the ability to analyze issues from multiple angles rather than just expressing love for animals.
Cattlemen’s Day Questions
Q: What college classes would you recommend for someone aiming to work in the cattle industry?
Start with broad economics and basic agriculture courses (micro/macro economics, farm management, budgets, records, marketing, futures markets, data analysis), then supplement with ag econ-specific coursework and perhaps ag finance to understand balance sheets and profitability.
