  • One of the best

Its straight down the line enjoyable listening, factual stuff. Listen weekly and will regularly relisten to podcasts. The guys have a good dynamic between them. The quality of content is high and guys do speak clearly, seems a strange thing to say but on some other cattle podcasts I sometimes struggle to clearly hear whats been said which you would think is rule number 1 on podcasts. These guys are clear.

    Thanks guys keep its up!

  • Finally!!

Finally a cowboys podcast I can listen too. Informative and gets to the point. I hate those other podcasts where they just need out. This one speaks to the family trying to improve their own operation.

  • Needs audio production improvement

Great content and knowledgeable hosts/guests but frequently seems like they are whispering. When I normally listen at 50% volume I need to turn it up to 90% to hear them. Will update review when I notice this improvement.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Summer Research and Herd Management: From Vitamin Stability to Confinement Strategies
Q: When should magnesium supplementation be stopped for grazing cows, especially on warm-season versus cool-season grasses, and how does calving timing influence this?
Supplementation should be tailored to forage type and cow physiology; warm-season grasses pose lower risk for grass tetany, while lactating cows or calves require more attention. Stop timing should be based on grass growth stage and calving schedule, and consult a nutritionist to ensure avoidance of deficiency during high-risk periods.
Summer Research and Herd Management: From Vitamin Stability to Confinement Strategies
Q: What are the issues with vitamin A stability in stored mineral mixes, and is it better to buy mineral in bulk for winter use?
Vitamin A deteriorates over time in stored feeds, particularly in mineral mixes, so producers should consider timing of purchase and storage, aiming to align stocking with periods of higher risk (e.g., fall into winter) and rely on vitamin A-rich forage when available, while trusting guidance from nutritionists.
Theileria Diagnosis, Cow Size Economics, and Heifer Rebreeding Strategies
Q: What factors should I consider when deciding between keeping larger vs smaller cows?
Consider forage base, stocking rate, labor requirements, calf value, and feed costs; larger cows may demand more forage and feed but can produce heavier calves, while smaller cows can reduce forage use and potentially improve efficiency depending on environment and market signals.
Theileria Diagnosis, Cow Size Economics, and Heifer Rebreeding Strategies
Q: How do I diagnose Theileria on-farm without waiting for lab results?
There isn't a rapid on-farm test that replaces lab PCR; use a combination of historical signs, necropsy findings when available, and send samples (preferably spleen tissue or blood) to a lab for confirmation, then interpret results in the herd's overall context.
Research Update: Larrison Hicks, Line Breeding, Nutritional Listener Questions
Q: How do aflatoxins in feed affect cattle, and how should producers manage risk?
Aflatoxins are chronic liver toxins that can cause long-term liver damage with widespread production impacts; management includes testing feeds, recognizing hotspot contamination, considering dilution strategies with reliable toxin data, and using binders where legally permissible, while understanding that full prevention can be costly and complex.
