  • Host talks more than guest

Good podcast but would prefer less talking from the host so can hear more from the guest.

  • Never talk about cats

While there’s a lot of useful information on this podcast, it’s mostly geared toward dogs. Very little topics addressed Cats specifically which kind of makes me feel that they’re one of those “I’m a dog person” … there’s a lot of topics they address about how to deal with upset clients and things of that nature, but never addressed the fact that prices have skyrocketed and most veterinary clinics have a 300 to 500% mark up on products and services. They just perpetuate the victim blaming in a sy... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mitral Valve Disease in Dogs
Q: What are the practical signs that indicate a need to escalate therapy in a dog with stage C?
Escalation is indicated by rapid heart size increase on imaging, rising left atrial pressures on ultrasound, worsening clinical signs such as coughing, dyspnea, rising breathing rate at rest, and azotemia limiting diuretic dosing.
Mitral Valve Disease in Dogs
Q: When should we consider referral to a cardiologist for a dog with a murmur?
Refer when radiographs suggest progression to stage B2 or C, when there is diagnostic uncertainty, or when optimized medical management reaches a plateau and a specialist could provide advanced therapies or surgical options.
Mitral Valve Disease in Dogs
Q: Can radiographs alone reliably stage the disease, or is echocardiography always necessary?
Radiographs can guide initial staging in many cases, but echocardiography provides precise measurements and can confirm or reclassify stage, especially in borderline cases or when deciding on therapies like pimobendan.
When Every Second Counts: Tips for Managing Emergencies in General Practice
Q: What are three common emergencies you see in general practice that require immediate stabilization?
The episode focuses on GDV, hemoabdomen, and respiratory distress as true emergencies. In each case, immediate stabilization with IV access, fluids, pain control, and support (oxygen for respiratory cases, rapid intubation when needed) is prioritized, followed by early diagnostic imaging and rapid decision-making about referral or surgical intervention.
Balancing Passion and Identity in Vet Med
Q: What do you do for hobbies to carve out time for yourself?
Sam describes a mix of activities, from community theater and painting to yoga and paddle boarding, highlighting how these outlets provide balance and a sense of accomplishment outside veterinary work.
