As an owner, and not associated with any prior vet knowledge until my dog ended up with bilateral angular limb deformity, on his 5th surgery and now dealing with OA all before the age of 3 your podcast has helped me understand his disorder and different routes of treatment.

Hopefully we hear a future podcast of the gut microbiome in canines and the effects antibiotics play, fingers crossed!

  • Fantastic for ER vets and beyond

I've been listening to the VETgirl podcast since it's beginning and, as a criticalist and ER DVM, I love the practical, evidence-based, and short / digestable format. Justine is a fantastic host and always inserts her own experiences and perspective into the conversation to make it relatable for the listeners. Definitely a must-listen-to podcast for those who want an easier way to keep up with the literature!

GI Food Allergy Mistakes Through a Dermatologist's POV with Dr. Ashley Bourgeois, DACVD | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Podcasts
Q: What are the three non-negotiables for managing chronic dermatology cases in general practice?
The three non-negotiables are: performing cytology to identify infections and guide antimicrobial use, ensuring access to effective antipruritic therapies to provide relief, and conducting a careful workup to determine the actual allergy culprit, recognizing that multiple allergies can coexist and require ongoing management.
GI Food Allergy Mistakes Through a Dermatologist's POV with Dr. Ashley Bourgeois, DACVD | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Podcasts
Q: How do you decide between hydrolyzed protein diets and novel protein diets for suspected food allergies?
Choice depends on the history and goal of the diet trial: hydrolyzed diets are often preferred when there is little prior dietary information, or when growth needs to be supported; novel protein diets can be useful when there is no known prior exposure and you want to minimize the chance of prior sensitization, but no protein is truly novel for every patient, so individual history matters.
GI Food Allergy Mistakes Through a Dermatologist's POV with Dr. Ashley Bourgeois, DACVD | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Podcasts
Q: When a patient presents with chronic pruritus and intermittent GI signs, what diagnostic steps are commonly skipped by general practitioners?
Many times practitioners skip a thorough diet history and a properly supervised diet trial, and they may overlook the need for an accurate diet challenge using prescription diets to rule in or out food allergy as a cause. Cytology to assess for infections is also frequently underutilized, which can obscure the true cause of pruritus and misguide treatment.
The DEA, Reverse Distribution for Veterinarians, and What You Need to Know | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Podcasts
Q: What should clinics look for when selecting a reverse distributor?
Look for a DEA-licensed distributor who can quickly provide their license, understands the forms, and responds rapidly to quotes; speed and expertise are essential for compliance.
The DEA, Reverse Distribution for Veterinarians, and What You Need to Know | VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Podcasts
Q: What forms must a veterinary clinic retain for compliance?
A clinic should retain the 222 form for schedule two drugs, the COD (certificate of destruction) with wet signatures, the DEA 41 form, and the 3–5 form manifest provided by the reverse distributor, plus copies kept in a fireproof safe.
