  • Loved latest ep - clinical empathy

Thanks for this episode. Ironically or not, this is what hospice and palliative care vets do on the daily. We have to weigh all the options. I am forever grateful for my veterinary education (Go gators) because I feel they set us up for success in this skill alone. From the beginning, we were taught to offer all the options, work with the family, and provide the care that they chose. It’s a conversation. I’ve found that more owners appreciate my openness my listening and honesty. I’ve treated a ... more

  • LOVE #186

Shelter veterinarian and veterinary nurse advocate here. Our credentialed nurses/technicians are often unrecognized and devalued when veterinarians struggle to utilize their talent and training to its fullest potential. I hope standardization of the profession is prioritized by state regulatory authorities as advocates continue to demand a seat at the table. Great conversation. To my techs out there, you are irreplaceable and I am grateful for what you do.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

404 - HDYTT: The Critical Feline Patient
Q: So Tasha, how do you look at cases like this?
The first priority is to differentiate analgesia from anesthesia and to stabilize the patient by assessing perfusion, oxygen delivery, and vital signs before considering induction. Analgesia is essential early, with attention to IV access, fluids, oxygenation, and targeted pain control to prevent a dangerous sympathetic surge and further instability.
396 - HDYTT: Fecal Transfer for Chronic Diarrhea
Q: How many times should owners expect to bring their pet in for treatment and how do you determine when to stop?
Typically eight sessions are used as a baseline, with retesting two to four weeks after the eighth to decide whether to continue or taper with diet and lifestyle changes; progress is monitored by clinical signs and microbiome results.
396 - HDYTT: Fecal Transfer for Chronic Diarrhea
Q: If you were starting from scratch with Victor and you didn't have testing, would you begin with microbiome testing to guide treatment or would you jump in?
I would start with microbiome testing to guide treatment and gain confidence in choosing the right modality, though clinical judgment remains important when readings fall into gray zones.
396 - HDYTT: Fecal Transfer for Chronic Diarrhea
Q: Okay. So tell me about that. How did you decide to start down this therapy path?
A client brought it to me who had researched human applications and asked if it could be possible for a dog; after reviewing limited information and with client buy-in, she and I explored fecal transplant as a therapy, iterating on protocols to reduce anesthesia and improve outcomes.
397 - Life Stages and Large Breeds in Canine Nutrition
Q: Can you walk me through the whole life stage philosophy and the drivers that move us from one nutritional phase to the next?
The life stage approach starts by looking at established nutrient profiles (growth/reproduction vs adult maintenance) per AFCO, then tailoring the diet based on the individual pet's age, growth trajectory, body condition, and comorbidities; senior status is often tied to the last 25% of expected lifespan and frailty factors, which may necessitate adjustments in energy and nutrient targets on a case-by-case basis.
