  • Useful info even just for pet owners looking for further info :)

I have a dog who’s had allergies since she was younger. Only 4 and has been dealing with a paw infection since November 20th. She got it cultured last week and just found out it’s MRSP. Episode 63 was really useful, but have MRSP cases in Oregon risen more over the years?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

283. GRAB BAG: Otitis
Q: How do you maintain allergic ears that flare but don't necessarily have infection?
Use topical steroids to control inflammation, maintain with regular seruminolytic flushes, adjust flushing frequency based on symptoms, and educate owners on home care to prevent progression to infection.
283. GRAB BAG: Otitis
Q: What are your recommendations to manage pseudomonas otitis, especially long-term?
Identify and address the underlying cause (allergies, endocrinopathies, mass) and consider early dermatology referral; emphasize deep ear flushing with biofilm-disrupting agents, inflammation control with appropriate steroids, and selective antibiotic choices based on organism risk, with caution about resistance.
283. GRAB BAG: Otitis
Q: How can you tell if otitis is due to allergies in a dog that has no other signs of parasite or infection?
A thorough history and otoscopic evaluation are essential; look for bilateral involvement, confirm there's no obvious mass or other cause, and consider imaging if unilateral disease or disproportionate ear involvement; even subtle paw-licking or head-shaking can indicate itch from allergies, not just infection.
314. Topical Therapy & the ISCAID Guidelines: Practical Updates with Dr. Allison Inga
Q: How do you optimize contact time and adherence for topical antiseptics?
Choose products that fit the owner's routine, ensure the product reaches the skin for the full recommended time, and use strategies like bathtime adaptations, distraction, and positive reinforcement to keep the animal comfortable during the full contact period.
314. Topical Therapy & the ISCAID Guidelines: Practical Updates with Dr. Allison Inga
Q: What are the advantages of topical therapy in pyoderma?
Topical therapy allows direct action at the skin with high local concentrations, helps remove debris, reduces the need for systemic antibiotics in many cases, and can be tailored to the patient's lifestyle and owner capabilities, which improves compliance.
