  • Podcast review - Daniel Jones

Just listened to the podcast with Geelong’s head of strength and conditioning. Such an interesting listen to get an insight into the setup/profiling that takes place in a high performance environment. Very insightful to hear the different approaches used in testing of equipment isn’t readily available. The ability to create an environment where S+C coaches are pushed/challenged and questions are asked by players is also another fascinating insight. I’m from Ireland playing GAA at a high level an... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#372 - Nic Gill Inside the NFL Baltimore Ravens High Performance Program
Q: What strategies does Gill think are most effective for finding the right person for a role?
He believes informal, relationship-based conversations and getting to know the person are crucial, rather than relying solely on prepared presentations; culture fit and long-term potential are key.
#372 - Nic Gill Inside the NFL Baltimore Ravens High Performance Program
Q: What was the most challenging part of the Ravens' interview process?
Gill explains the hardest part was navigating the final multi-panel interview with the 'big dogs' and the initial six-hour process, where the organization assessed fit across diverse groups before offering the role.
#371 - Dan Ramsden on Post-Concussion Injury Risk Nobody Talks About
Q: What are some misconceptions or common mistakes you hear about post-concussion management, and what solutions can mitigate those mistakes?
Common misconceptions include assuming that if a player isn't unconscious, they aren't concussed, and relying solely on neurocognitive tests without considering vestibular and neck factors. A solution is to implement a comprehensive, data-driven testing regime that incorporates vestibular screens, neck strength, and real-world functional measures, alongside clear communication with coaches about why certain return steps are necessary.
#368 - Nick Poulos on Complex Training and Load Monitoring
Q: What are the key distinctions between PAP and post-activation performance enhancement in practice?
PAP refers to rapid, short-term increases in contractile ability with a brief time course, while practical improvements in performance over longer time frames involve broader factors such as neural drive, temperature, and readiness that develop over several minutes of rest and conditioning.
#368 - Nick Poulos on Complex Training and Load Monitoring
Q: How would you define complex training in the context of a field sport like AFL?
Complex training is a broad umbrella that integrates heavy resistance work with explosive movements within the same session, intended to provide a neuromuscular exposure that can enhance performance when timed appropriately and tailored to the athlete's fatigue level and the environment.
