  • Sorry for the nutters who post

Science based health is hard to hear if your entire life is surrounded by alternative medicine, I’m banking my health on the guys/girls who spent years earning PHDs (from real universities) than whacky “I have feeling” weirdos who have left 1 ⭐️ reviews, exceptional podcast, love that it’s Australian too.

  • Chip’n’ buttie

Scottish mum bought her cooking with her. We had the same chip pot that the health dept would have closed down but those chips were the best.

Thanks for clarifying the myths and misinformation about seed oils etc.

  • Evidence often conflated

Norman Swann undermines the value of this Podcast by often cherry picking evidence without enough disclaimers such as lack of RCTs in humans and basing his narrative around animal studies whilst ignoring evidence that goes against it.

The latest example was the episode on Creatine. Extremely disappointing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tonsils, appendix, gallbladder: is anything actually useless?
Q: Cass asks about the long-term consequences of removing the appendix and whether it increases risks for inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer.
The evidence shows associations with increased risks in some conditions after appendectomy, but these are not causal; the decision depends on balancing infection risk against potential downstream effects and the underlying propensity for appendicitis.
Tonsils, appendix, gallbladder: is anything actually useless?
Q: Jane asks how the body compensates if the gallbladder is removed, and whether removing such an organ is ever justifiable.
Removal is typically considered when gallstones are symptomatic, as it prevents ongoing pain and complications; digestion adjusts over time, though some people experience changes in fat digestion temporarily.
Should you be eating more fruit?
Q: Jonathan asks whether we should be eating ancient fruit varieties or modern varieties bred for higher sugar, and what science says about sugar content and health implications.
Swan discusses a Chinese study identifying genes affecting sugar in tomatoes and notes that ancient varieties may have different sugar profiles, but the bigger point is that choosing fruits (and vegetables) and enjoying variety is preferable to fixating on ancient versus modern varieties; the potential sugar differences are small in the broader health context.
Should you be eating more fruit?
Q: Jamie asks whether there is anything you can get from fruit that you can't get from vegetables, or if eating vegetables covers all the key nutrients fruit provides.
Norman Swan explains that fruit ubiquity is matched by vegetables in terms of most nutrients, with fruit offering certain antioxidants and natural sugars, but a varied diet of vegetables and fruit generally covers the nutritional landscape; the emphasis is on practical eating patterns rather than chasing a single 'essential' nutrient from fruit alone.
Can flossing benefit more than your teeth?
Q: What about the order of brushing and flossing? Does it make a difference?
It doesn't make much difference either way, as long as you do it.
