MTHFR Testing | The Performance Medicine Show #208
Q: How often should people check MTHFR mutation-related risks and what should they supplement?
Check MTHFR status, especially if there are related symptoms; use methylated B-vitamins (methylcobalamin B12 and methylfolate), add B6, and consider trimethylglycine to reduce homocysteine, with aspirin consideration after age 40 if indicated by mutation.
MTHFR Testing | The Performance Medicine Show #208
Q: What are your thoughts on NMN vs NR and NAD+ supplementation?
NMN and NR are preferred precursors to NAD+ for energy and mitochondrial support, with NR and NMN offering practical benefits and being more effective when used in the right context; IV NAD+ is less favored due to absorption issues.
MTHFR Testing | The Performance Medicine Show #208
Q: What do you think of a PRP shot for glute tendonitis?
PRP is worth trying and may be better than steroids for tendonitis in certain large joints, though it doesn't work quickly and its effectiveness varies by joint size and technique; it's a cautious, evidence-informed option.
How To Diagnose And Treat Low Thyroid | The Performance Medicine Show #206
Q: What is the best approach to thyroid treatment if Armour or NP-thyroid is not covered by insurance?
Advocates for working with a provider to obtain NP-thyroid directly if insurance won't cover Armour, highlighting cost-effective three-month supplies and adjusting doses to meet patient needs.
How To Diagnose And Treat Low Thyroid | The Performance Medicine Show #206
Q: Debbie's question on peripheral neuropathy and relief options.
The host suggests investigating causative factors like diabetes or back problems, and recommends targeted supplements such as 50-100 mg of B6 (too much can worsen neuropathy), plus considering prescription options like Gabapentin or Lyrica while acknowledging potential side effects; emphasis is placed on good glycemic control for type 1 diabetes and addressing underlying causes.
