Lift Talk is quickly becoming Australia’s own King of the Lifts, especially as it relates to Australia’s IPF affiliate, the Australian Powerlifting Alliance. As a newcomer to the powerlifting community host Alex Hayes and his guests provide great content to keep me informed of all things tested powerlifting in Australia.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

82 - Dealing With Injuries
Q: Why do you think powerlifters are so princess about being injured?
The dynamic is nuanced; some athletes come from sports where pain tolerance and pushing through adversity are valued, but many powerlifters lack long-term exposure to injury management, leading to fear of pain and a tendency to catastrophize. Education about pain, gradual exposure, and a sport-specific rehab approach help shift mindset toward constructive coping and continued training.
040 - Psychology of Pain with Nick Papastamatis
Q: How do we know that we have an injury that can't be pushed through versus something that we can train through?
If someone's just a bit niggly, you can usually work through that, but if it's more than a four out of ten, that’s starting to get concerning.
040 - Psychology of Pain with Nick Papastamatis
Q: How do you then take this information that you've just shared and develop questioning to your patients?
My approach in the clinic is quite intuitive; I'm listening to what they're saying and not saying, and reading their body language.
040 - Psychology of Pain with Nick Papastamatis
Q: How do those three things then interact with one another?
They are completely interconnected, and anything that happens in a relationship in the social model can create emotional overload that is linked to pain sensitivity.
037 - Evie Corrigan
Q: How much does your training structure change going between weight classes?
It didn't change much due to dropping down; changes were more about what worked for me.
