  • Reaching anyone…?

Beyond parody that Neal Lawson presents himself as so anti Labour in government and pro-pluralism, when in the New Labour days he was a cynical lobbyist, selling contacts for hard cash. Offering, if needed, to “reach anyone. We can go to Gordon Brown if we have to”.

  • Poetry and Orwell Prize

I thought, as a person who derives much from reading poetry, this episode was superb and the discussion was both enjoyable and thought provoking.

Thanks to all involved at Compass.

  • The kind of country I want to live in!

Thanks so much for the work you do. I’ve listened to a few podcasts now and am very interested in a Universal Basic Income for the UK and particularly for Scotland. The presenters and speakers are excellent and so passionate and knowledgable about the topics discussed. Keep doing what your doing Compass and together we can build a better country where citizens can live with dignity and fairness for all. Would highly recommend this podcast.

  • So Informative, So Enjoyable

I just love the Compass podcasts and have so much respect for Neal and Grace who present and co-ordinate them. The most recent one on the Corbyn era and its legacy was just so useful to helping those on the Left, be it the soft or hard, to understand a way forward. Neal chaired the discussion and debate so well. His proposal about the need for pragmatism and for being outward looking seems to me to be so wise. Millions should be listening to this wonderful series of podcasts. Thanks Compass.

Q: Can Labour realistically adopt a populist economic approach without destabilizing financial markets?
It could be possible within Overton-window constraints if they maintain fiscal credibility while pushing cost-of-living and public service improvements that appeal across the left-right divide.
The Poll-tergeist: Our Fragmented Politics and Labour’s ‘Progressive Defectors’ | ep. 144
Q: What would be a practical strategy to assemble a progressive majority?
Focus on a cohesive economic populist prospectus that unites progressive voters with wavering left-leaning swing voters, while managing cultural cleavages and forming formal or informal coordination with other left-leaning parties.
The Poll-tergeist: Our Fragmented Politics and Labour’s ‘Progressive Defectors’ | ep. 144
Q: Where do Lib Dems fit in the mix now?
They are seen as a potential anti-reform bulwark in certain regions, useful for voters who want an option between Labour and reform, though existential questions about their role remain.
Is it Time for PR?: Lifting the Lid on Britain’s Pressure-Cooker Politics with Stuart Donald and Emma Harrison | ep. 143
Q: What are the key arguments Compass and Make Votes Matter would use to persuade an undecided Labour MP to support PR?
The answer centers on showing MPs that PR broadens representation, improves governance by reducing tactical voting, and aligns with long-term popular will, while presenting a concrete, implementable pathway via a National Commission and interim systems.
A World of Trouble: Is US Hegemony Crumbling? with Mary Kaldor and Nick Dearden | ep. 142
Q: In that kind of view, how do we ensure it's not just passing sovereignty to bureaucrats?
