  • Reaching anyone…?

Beyond parody that Neal Lawson presents himself as so anti Labour in government and pro-pluralism, when in the New Labour days he was a cynical lobbyist, selling contacts for hard cash. Offering, if needed, to “reach anyone. We can go to Gordon Brown if we have to”.

  • The kind of country I want to live in!

Thanks so much for the work you do. I’ve listened to a few podcasts now and am very interested in a Universal Basic Income for the UK and particularly for Scotland. The presenters and speakers are excellent and so passionate and knowledgable about the topics discussed. Keep doing what your doing Compass and together we can build a better country where citizens can live with dignity and fairness for all. Would highly recommend this podcast.

  • So Informative, So Enjoyable

I just love the Compass podcasts and have so much respect for Neal and Grace who present and co-ordinate them. The most recent one on the Corbyn era and its legacy was just so useful to helping those on the Left, be it the soft or hard, to understand a way forward. Neal chaired the discussion and debate so well. His proposal about the need for pragmatism and for being outward looking seems to me to be so wise. Millions should be listening to this wonderful series of podcasts. Thanks Compass.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

In Conversation with Nish Kumar | ep. 135
Q: Is the Labour government too close to Trump-aligned US tech and AI billionaires? If so, is this a threat to our democracy?
Yes, the Labour government needs to be skeptical about its dealings with tech companies and recognize they pose threats to democracy.
In Conversation with Nish Kumar | ep. 135
Q: Where did you get your politics from Nish in, in, you know, in Croydon?
Kumar's parents were politically engaged, with his mother involved in anti-NF rallies in the 70s, and his family having historical ties to left-wing politics in India.
Can Labour build a way out of Britain’s housing crisis? with Cllr Aydin Dikerdem and Dr Beth Stratford | ep 134

Most housing professionals doubt the realism of delivering 1.5 million homes within Parliament and emphasize the need for focusing on various other levers to tackle affordability beyond just new builds.
Can Labour build a way out of Britain’s housing crisis? with Cllr Aydin Dikerdem and Dr Beth Stratford | ep 134
Q: Could you give us a concise explanation of why the housing crisis in the UK is so profoundly urgent?
The housing crisis is urgent because people are forced to choose between basic needs like eating and paying rent, which drives many towards the far right's simplistic narrative during these challenging times.
The Starmer Symptom with Mark Perryman
Q: What would you highlight as key chapters in your book that listeners should look out for?
I would emphasize contributions from thinkers like Danny Dorling on inequality and Andrew Sims on the climate emergency.
