I had to stop listening to this because I found the tone increasingly extremely irritating. Suggesting that only some actions of people are related to the exercise of their agency rather than rational choices being something he may not recognise or that poor people don’t eat well because they don’t know any better, for example. For Amol who professes an interest in social mobility it’s extraordinarily narrow minded about people and the reasons their lives and choices may be circumscribed and tha... more

  • Must listen

I love this podcast. Every guest and discussion topic somehow manages to feel timely and timeless all at once. I do have to remind myself to listen in moderation as if I’m not careful, it can feed my anxiety and depression about the state of the world. But everything good in life is only good in moderation!!

  • Actually quite good

Amol is ubiquitous which rubs some up the wrong way. BUT this format suits him very well. This is a tight production. No waffle like many other pods. He is well read, probing, lets guests talk but plays devils advocate well. I haven’t listened to all - but the ones I have are excellent. A welcome addition to politics / current affairs / ‘the way we live now.’

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Could All Government Decisions Be Made Through an App? (Your Radical Questions with Hélène Landemore)
Q: Is it possible to see a future where every government decision is made via public referendum through an app?
Hélène explains there could be a version of that in direct democracy, like Switzerland, but cautions that too many referenda could overwhelm citizens; instead, she favors deliberative processes like citizen assemblies which allow informed, collective reasoning before decisions are made.
The Reading Recession: Are We Making Ourselves Less Intelligent? (James Marriott)
Q: What role do technologies like AI play in this trajectory?
AI and other advanced tech could distort reality further by shaping how we see the world, making critical thinking and shared truths more challenging, unless countermeasures in literacy and media literacy are strengthened.
The Reading Recession: Are We Making Ourselves Less Intelligent? (James Marriott)
Q: Is there hope, or is this an unstoppable trend?
There are signs of resistance, such as book clubs and long-form podcasts, and a cultural shift toward valuing deep reading; change is possible if society consciously champions literacy and critical thinking.
The Reading Recession: Are We Making Ourselves Less Intelligent? (James Marriott)
Q: What does the decline in reading mean for democracy and public life?
Marriott explains that literacy created the conditions for democratic participation; a decline in deep reading and comprehension could undermine informed civic engagement, even if basic reading remains possible.
Who Is Responsible For Over-Medicalisation? (Your Radical Questions with Dr Suzanne O’Sullivan)
Q: Given the evidence that autistic people face extremely high suicide rates, how can you justify reducing or questioning diagnoses?
We are not talking about eliminating diagnoses but ensuring support exists without over-reliance on labels; teachers, GPs, and others can support people without a formal neurodevelopmental diagnosis, and we must scrutinize the science behind suicide risk claims.
